Hendry doesn't want to 'equal out the salaries'. He's trying to find someone to pay as much of the remaining $21M on Bradley's contract as possible so he can use that 'savings' to fill other holes on the roster. Just swapping bad contracts and evening out the money won't accomplish what they are trying to do.

Isn't "what they're trying to accomplish" getting rid of a clubhouse cancer? of course if they can do it w/o throwing in a ton of cash that would be preferable, but isn't just getting rid of him what they're trying to do?

They want to do that AND 'save' money in the process. The cubs have zero payroll flexibility and need to rid themselves of as much of this contract as possible before they can address other needs. Not an easy task to accomplish to say the least.

Did you ever work with someone with a negative attitude?
You know, someone who is always saying things like, "This place sucks," or
"I wish I could quit this lousy job?"
You try to ignore it, but I would wager that the productivity of all who sit
around that person goes down whether or not they want it to.

Funny you should ask that SteveSarley. I work with a real Richard of a guy who does nothing but bitch all day about my company. but I still perform my duties to the best of my ability. It's what they pay me to do. My job isn't dependent on my liking whom I work with. I will lose my job or my customer will stop coming if they saw that I didn't like the guy.
You have to transcend petty bullshit if you strive to excel.

Troow, I say you'd perform even better without Richard around. It's just human nature.

Hopefully someday you'll ascend to a position where you can choose your teammates. Its not unique to sports. There are lawyers, doctors, economists etc. that handpick their teams. They wouldnt dream of "just dealing with it". Its a perk of being in the 0.00000001 percent of people who get those positions.

Also your analogy doesnt work...cus its not just that One person or even several people Dont like Bradley. He's underperforming and impeding the teams ability to reach its collective goal.

If youre Richard was making you less likely to succeed in your work...would you have a problem then?

There are rumors of Bradley to the Bosox for Mike Lowell. I'm not sure how this makes any sense... unless ARam or Lee is being shopped...

I wouldn't doubt that there's a taker out there. He probably moves in Feb.
These "interested" teams know damn good and well that if they wait long enough, they get a power switch hittter for free. Why pay when you don't have to? If values are dropping, and you don't NEED to buy, you wait until the seller is desperate.

SI's Jon Heyman was on with Mully and Hanley today and said there is zero market for Bradley right now, without the Cubs essentially eating all of the contract. The Rays have decided that one year of Pat Burrell is better than two years of Milton Bradley. Texas has acquired Mike Lowell from Boston, so they are out of the mix also. Looks like Hendry and Company have overplayed their hand and they will need to either pay 90% of the contract to trade him, trade him with a bonafide blue chip prospect (Vitters?) and only play 50%, release him or trot him out to right field again.

If Fukudome has even a half-way decent last 2/3rds of the 2008 season, the Cubs don't go looking for a left-handed right field bat during the 2008 off-season.

From MLBtraderumors.com:

1:37pm: USA Today's Bob Nightengale has Cubs officials saying they are close to a Bradley trade, and Nightengale thinks it'll be with the Rays. MLBTR's source continues to say there's nothing new, however.

It sounds like the Cubs were trying to create a false market for Bradley in the hope that some team with real interest would come along and want to make a deal.

I'm not surprised that they haven't been able to move - the market for pitchers seems to be moving along, but I don't think many position players have been signed to contracts yet. There are a glut of DH type hitters already on the market so that may have to sort itself out before a team wants to take on a potential headache for 2 seasons, no matter the discount from the deal that the Cubs will give.

If they were to sign him, I doubt he would cost very much considering his past injuries.

Why not just bring in Mark Prior?

I ain't interested in either one of them, just saying that I doubt money would be a problem with signing him.

They could trade him right now but Hendry doesn't want to eat all the money. He's going to have to make a decision soon or this off season is going to pass him by.

According to the Seattle Times' Larry Stone, the Cubs have agreed to trade Milton Bradley to the Mariners for right-hander Carlos Silva.
It'll be interesting to see what kind of money is being exchanged. Silva, who is owed $24 million over the next two years, posted an 8.60 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 30 innings this past season and a 6.46 ERA in 153 1/3 innings the year before. Bradley, owed $21 million, batted a disappointing .257/.378/.397 this season with Chicago but is only one year removed from a career-best .321/.436/.563 batting line. For now, it appears the Mariners and GM Jack Zduriencik have pulled off another excellent deal.

Very curious to see the financial particulars about this deal. Kudos to Jim for finding a worse contract though.

It's a crime that Carlos Silva has 1/2 of 1 good(ish) season and gets $48 million.

At least Bradley was good at one time.

   It's sad that I have to applaud this, because I was really hoping that Milton wouldn't...well, act like Milton, and that he would've made some sort contribution to the club. We needed him to be sent outta town because that rift between Bradley and the management and team was irreparable.

Bradley has some value. Silva has none. There has to be at least $5M coming the cubs way. If not more.

Unless Silva is some sort of raging turd, I'm unaware of that if he is, the $ doesn't matter in this case. This is a good deal. The Cubs were on the hook for that $ no matter what.

Onthe other hand, I expect Bradley to at least some-what return to form as a hitter, especially with other good hitters around him and not having to play the field. Look Seattle'e top half of the line-up. They're going for it, obviously.

I'm reserving full judgment until all the particulars come out. I hope to God we have 2-3 million coming back or a low level prospect or two. Silva has less value than Bradley..which is mind boggling
