Just so the Ricketts ALS understands my position, I understand what they want. They dont want to be the overspending knuckleheads of baseball. Which I agree with, but in case they dont know yet, they are that team in 2010! They have so much invested in some of these players why wouldn't you go and get one more valuable player that can lead off or a RF power hitter.

Go make Jason Bay a 2 year $20 million offer. Maybe he takes it.

2011 is your year to cut back, back up the truck, maybe you eat some money but you have a number of players that people will want. Demp, Lilly, D Lee, Ram, Z, Maybe even Soriano if he has a comeback year. Not that they will pick up the contracts dollar for dollar, but you can easily move almost all these guys with a little cash and you are out from under the big money.

BUT Today, you are under that money, so why not try to win? Instead of competing with Oakland, KC and Seattle for free agents.

I am not even telling you Byrd is the answer, but I know we need some players!

I agree Bigfan, but while the Cubs are probably waiting to let some of these big contracts wind down, I think this is a sign of things to come - I fully expect to see the payroll drop down a few million in the coming years, perhaps to around $100 or maybe just below. The spin, of course, will be that instead of spending foolishly, they will spend smarter.

Maybe for salary relief, the Cubs should try to trade a desirable player for some promising young guys. I would not mind seeing Sam Fuld & Tyler Colvin taking turns in CF. The Cubs are throwing money at vets who have seen better years. I like Marlon Byrd but if they don't get him,go with youth.

there's no need to go youth other than making Fuld or another youngster your CF and leadoff. You can't do any worse than Soriano's April and May last season.

Dan Bernstein is the President of the Tom Ricketts ALS. Why, I do not know.

They already have a $140M payroll and adding Bay won't fix what's broke. They would be better off using that money to fill in the many holes this team has in the rotation, bullpen, 2B and CF.
