No doubt Thibs resume is pretty impressive. It is curious how in the same NBA that has given jobs to VDN and Mike Brown and a host of other boobs, how does he not already have a head coaching job?

Back to Mitchell for a moment. Found this nuggett while searching the net in regard to worst NBA coaches:

Sports Illustrated, best known for supplying your dentist's office with 6-month old reading material, took a break from making softcore porn to declare the Raptor's coach Sam Mitchell the worst coach in the NBA. Out of a random survey of 248 NBA players, most of whom have never even played for him, 15% have tagged Sam Mitchell as not being able to distinguish a playbook from a Pop-Tart...which is actually quite easy, since Pop-Tarts are frosted.

A job in the Raptors organization is a lot like prison, so Mitchell first arrived in Toronto last season with the Oz mentality: if you don't want to be the bitch, scare everyone by kicking someone's ass right away. Players regularly bounced from the starting lineup to the end of the bench and back. Former CBAer Rafer Alston was so demoralized at one point he considered quitting the NBA. This is from a guy who, up until this point, is best known for touring community colleges in the midwest to play pickup ball for ESPN2. Something is seriously wrong.

not able to distinguist a playbook from a Pop-tart.

How about Tyrone Corbin or Jeff Hornacek? If we're going to take a shot on someone with no head coaching experience, why not someone whose learned under Sloan? The Jazz always seem to get good point guard play. Now granted, Stockton was an all time great, but how many here predicted the rise of Deron Williams? Doesn't Sloan and his coaching staff deserve some recognition for their handling of him?

despite your indefensible and irrational love of the inert mitchell i liked you till this post. Remember mike montgomery? Sampson might be worse.

No doubt. I would not hire Sampson to coach a middle school team.

btw carrie we could always use you in the general nba section. Always great to add knowledgable nba people here. I use the term knowledgable in spite of your shark-like defense of mitchell.

I kind of like the Corbin angle. Or for that matter, Hornacek. Come to think of it, all 3 guys (including Sloan) have local ties and could bring that "Chicago tough" mojo that fans could really get behind. Let's blow up the Jazz roster and hire the whole damn coaching staff!

I would take Sloan in an instant, but I don't ever see him leaving Utah. The other 2...eh...I do not have any reason to believe they are any better than Vinny.

The more I read about him, the more I'd like to see him on the bench as one of the assistant coaches.

I think

I don't know much about him, but I am always leery of guys proclaimed as a "guru" of anything. But if he is any good I am sure he will get a shot to be an assistant somewhere.

The last must have up and comer I remember was Michael Curry. Everyone wanted him and Detroit wouldn't let him go. As for Corbin and Hornacek, at least they've been on the bench learning under Sloan.

Here's another interesting name I haven't really seen bandied about:

Mike Budenholzer

Spurs #1 Assistant Coach.

Has learned under one of the all time greats - Pop.

Has coached future Hof's.

Terrific x's and o's guy by all accounts.

Will tell his players what they need to hear, not what they want to hear.

He's interesting......

for the record this also describes pj carlesimo

i dont really know anything about him you cant read online. I just noticed that looked very similar to carlesimo's resume. I agree the spurs have one of the best staff's in the league. Some guys are forever meant to be good assistants(tex winter, del harris, rambis, etc.) maybe he's not one of them. To be fair, the same could be said for my guy thibs. He does have a good resume.

Exactly one of the reasons I am a little leery of Thibs.

Who was the last guy known as a "great assistant" that went on to be a great head coach?

Phil was the last one I could really think of, just seems you don't see that happening much.
