I don't get people bagging on the chicago hall of fame induction. The guy has had an undeniable impact on the sports scene in this city. He, along with HFC and Jiggs, created the industry in this city from nothing. Sure there were shows like Chet's here and there but it was nothing like full time sports. You can dislike what he has become but you must acknowledge his contribution.

I don't know how big of a deal this thing is but congrats mike.

I don't understand how you honor North but not the other key players in getting sports radio off the ground in the city.

As much as I can't stand Murph, if North is in shouldn't he be in. Hell, Murph's been at it since mid 80's right? Same goes for Coppock, Swirsky, et all.

I agree though that Pappy bought his induction. There's probably a nice little addition soon to be under construction.

Murph, Tom Shaer, Coppock, Danny Mac, Boers, Swirsky, Jim Memelo, Grobber, etc....
I mean, it's a pretty big list of major contributors to just single out one guy.

It is a joke Dolphin. Pappy can be proud if he wants. It's a Hall of Fame that people don't care about. Nobody knows or cares about the voting process. What's the criteria? Can't be ratings success. He probrally got in because he drank with the crusty old rich, white guys who run this thing.

Danny Mac is way more acomplished then Pappy in the radio business and has been doing it longer then Pappy. You could even make a case that Boers has had more success then Pappy.

Like I said Pappy can throw a party for him self and have all radio people kiss his ass over this. In the end it's no big deal. I've never heard of this HOF and nobody else cares about it other then the people who run it.

I can see what you are saying but I disagree. Most of those guys had shows in remote slots on regular talk stations or were bit players at the SCORE. If you want to honor the trailblazers of full time sports talk in this city it is North, Jiggs, Mac and Terry. No more no less.

I agree that all four of them deserve to be there but you don't keep Ruth out simply because you have not gotten to Mantle yet.

Chet, Chuck and Murph: they've been more of a trailblazer than Mr. Jag Bag. I remember listening to the Loop on Sunday nights, Murph on WLS and Chet almost everywhere.
Mike and Jiggs were decent, but Northy is a horrible solo act.

North might have had a nice following with Jigs in his midday show. But since then he failed as a Solo guy. He failed at his afternoon shot. Horrible in his morning show.

Mac and Boers had a 7 year run with pretty good numbers. Mac went on to have a #1 show for men with another station. Boers survived and is doing OK in the afternoons. Boers has been carried by both his partners. But still he has had more success then Pappy.

Imagine if the Score made Boers go with Jigs instead of Mac. Terry might not be around anymore if that happened.

Maybe they thought he had retired...

Since 1996, the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame has sat at Maryville Academy in Des Plaines, so ignored that it can't charge admission. But you'd think champion-deprived Chicagoans would pay to see Bobby Hull's hockey stick, Minnie Minoso's jersey and a 2,200- pound statue of Walter Payton, so the museum is considering a relocation where it will get more traffic.

A lot more. As in Navy Pier, which annually draws more than 8 million people. If 1 percent of them hit the museum, attendance will grow 80 times from what it typically gets in a year at Maryville.

"We are meeting with Navy Pier officials next week," said Bill Watson, who runs the museum for Maryville. "We have signed nothing with them yet." He said the museum needs to move where it can charge for admission and gain visibility. The museum "is not easy to find and we can't spend money to promote it," he said.

It's looking at about 2,500 square feet. The terrace in Festival Hall is one possibility, said Billy Weinberg, spokesman for the state- city authority that runs Navy Pier. But Weinberg emphasized that talks are in very early stages.

The Sun-Times has documented that the museum owes about $750,000 to Maryville, which had planned on the attraction being a revenue producer. Moving to Chicago's top tourist location may be the only way to chip away at that debt. Currently, the museum's annual induction ceremony is its only source of cash.

I came in lateon this discussion, but Nas why do you have a problem with North getting this award "after his prime." Uhh...its a HOF award. Usually these awards no matter the business are given out while you still work but are at the end of your career or you've been gone from the game (company/business/whatever) for awhile.

Secondly, dolphin is right about North being an impact on the sports talk scene. It'd be foolish to say he wasn't. I'm not a fan of his morning show at all, but I feel he does deserve this award. He's done a lot for sports talk in the past 15 years.

Seems like a lot of discussion for an irrelevant night of honor. THis is nothing more than a $50 or $100 a plate fund raiser that honors one guy or another. A bunch of people pay $100, have a few well drinks and some rubber chicken, get a few laughs and feel good they donated ($10 of it) to charity. This kind of stuff goes on all the time in the biz world. In some cases, the honoree and his company make a significant donation to the charity involved. People are toasted, roasted or inducted into all kinds of things in Chicago and other cities nearly every month of the year in the name of fund-raising. Everybody knows the gig. But leave it to some sports media guys to make it more than it is.

You said it Coast. It doesn't bother me that he got in. It's an irrelevant Hall of Fame just randomly made up by somebody. Nobody knows the criteria for getting in is. It's all random. Seems like it's a chance for grown men to get together and discuss how great they all are. They induct the athletes so they come to future dinners. But I'll bet in the end the only time athletes show up is when they are inducted. It's no different then a bunch of kids making up a club. Only these are adults.

It's just annoying, like you said, that Pappy makes a big deal out of it. I've heard George Offman announce it on his updates. That's all. In the end it's no big deal except for in the mind of Pappy and all his media friends who kiss his ass over this.

Maybe we should start the Chicago Sports Fan Hall of Fame. Each year, we induct those fans that epitomize what it means to be a Chicago sports fan. We contribute to a charity, have a nice dinner, a few laughs and give the honoree a plaster likeness of da Coach in this pose:

In regards to that Coast, a couple of years ago I stopped in Canton on my way back from a family trip on the east coast. I was not aware it was the day before the Hall of Fame game. That was the day Visa was honoring its contestant winners for the best fan in each city. My young son and I were walking around the hall when a very fat man in Raider face paint, uniform and leather bar accessories strolled into the room we were in. My son was in the early stages of speech development where no thought goes unspoken and every word is spoken loudly. Normally I would be embarassed when he said "that fat man scares me." I'm sure the Raider fan took it as a compliment.
