The Cubs are in the market for a 4th outfielder. The 3 names I have heard kicked around are Nady Jermaine Dye and Reed Mantle. They all seem a bit ouchy for my tastes. Any thoughts on this? Maybe some of the Sox fans who populate the Cubs forum can give a scouting report on Dye does he have anything left in the tank or is he primarily a DH at this point.

Jermaine Dye and Xavier Nady are not going to take 4th outfielder money. Reed Mantle is fine in that role. Bring him back.

Dye brings nothing that you look for in a 4th OF...and he is better than at least Byrd and Fukudome anyway.

Dye needs to be on an AL team where he can DH and maybe play RF twice a week. Reed Johnson is cheaper, as are minor leaguers.

They need middle relief and another started before they worry about a 4th OF.

Where does the left handed hitting Sam Fuld fit into this mix? As we all know...well, at least according to Lou-ppy and Hendry...the only reason the Dodgers swept us out of the playoff's was because we were too right handed. Thus...setting the stage for the Milton Bradley era.

they had lots of left-handed hitters to choose from, LAST off-season. they just chose the wrong one. this team as currently built is still dominated by right-handed hitters, a year and a half after everyone agreed it was a big problem. its all good though, the scene is set for a huge blow-up heading into next year, so lets shop these current guys around and start fresh with a new gm and coaching staff next year. id prefer they dumped the gm FIRST, then disassemble the team. i dont want hendry making bad trades and THEN getting canned. lets can him by spring training so the cubs can get busy.

I'm asking the same thing - why doesn't Fuld get a shot at the 4th spot? Granted it was not a full season of work but a .299 average and OPS of over 800 is pretty good for a backup. In comparison, Johnson in his two years with the Cubs is hitting .287 with a OPS of .766. Comparable numbers and Fuld probably comes at a bargain compared to some moderate deal Johnson will sign.

I can't say that I disagree with you. Also...it was funny....either I heard it on one of the stations or read it on this board, but it was funny how Hendry totally contradicted himself with the signing of Bradley and the whole...we need to be more left handed shit...then he signs Byrd this year, and starts referring back to when the Cubs won the division and 90-some-odd games in 2008 and they were mostly right handed. Well....which one is it Hendry??? F'n boob!

I am pretty sure they are pencilling in Fuld for the 5th OF spot

i really like reed johnson as a 4th outfielder as long as thats what he can accept and be paid to do. but i also wouldnt complain if sam fuld was the 4th outfielder. hes good defensively and seems to have that little white guy spark in him that theriot has.

I thought there was a whiff of speculation about Ankiel, Boras seems to think he can start somewhere but i don't see anyone offering him starter money. Left hand stick, decent glove and a little pop...

I would love for them to get Nady. Let him and Byrd battle for a starting job. I think Nady would win it. Dye does nothing for a NL team.

I think you want your 4th OF to have some flexibililty glove wise where he can play. And with Soriano and his defense - you probably want that guy to be a + defender.

Jermaine,
Here is a contract for $1.5 M for one year. Let me know if you want to sign it.
Jim Hendry

I know the guy has big money, but he is building a $4 million house in the burbs and even MJ had his decissions to make and thus wanted to live in his house.

Once February hits, this suddenly becomes a buyer's market (it already kind of was). I still think Dye will get a 4-5 million offer.
