Report: Perry Fewell chooses Giants over Bears
January 14, 2010 11:04 AM | 2 Comments | UPDATED STORY
By Brad Biggs

It's back to the drawing board on the defensive side of things for the Bears.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Perry Fewell, the first and only known candidate to succeed Lovie Smith in the role of defensive coordinator, has decided to join forces with Tom Coughlin and the New York Giants.

That leaves the Bears in a difficult position, as Smith is seeking someone with experience in his defense.

It has been a challenging week for the franchise. Jeremy Bates, targeted as a candidate for the offensive coordinator job, turned down the opportunity to come meet with the Bears. The team was then rebuffed in its efforts to gain permission from the Green Bay Packers to meet with Tom Clements about the offensive coordinator job. Although the Bears had not identified Bates or Clements as front-runners for the job, they were the candidates they reached out to at the very beginning of the process.

no one in their right mind is coming here with a lame duck mangment team unless their job out look is just as bad as lovie is. next year is gonna be another ugly season, but at least we have draft picks after next season

Even Lovie's buddies realize this is a bad spot to be.

Coughlin may be on the hottest seat in the NFL from the get go next year. Essentially
the same situation he would have had here, except maybe better talent and a chance
to help turn things around in NY.

This is embarrassing. What a bush league organization.

Can't blame the guy. Who in their right mind would take the Bears DC job under Lovie rather than the Giants DC job?

agreed, but i do think the giants are poised to turn it around very quickly. i think the immediate upside with the giants has greater possibilities than with the bears. i hate using injuries as a crutch, but the entire giants starting secondary, a young talented group, were all on the sidelines this past season. with the return of aaron ross at corner and particularly kenny phillips at strong safety, i think the defense can rebound quickly.

i think this is a huge story. the bears will find NO ONE of any caliber to work for them. this is going to be hilarious. you couldn't make this shit up.

Don't these guys realize that this is the best defensive coordinator job in the league because Jay Cutler makes the defense better?

Probably more money too. If I could lose my job after 1 season I'm going to go to the place where I maximize my earning potential.

Agreed 100%.

Giants already have a legitimate pass rush and a proven secondary that is poised to rebound making Fewell look like a genius. In addition they have the type of running game that keeps defenses off the field.

Anybody worthwhile that watched the arrogant Lovie Smith at that press conference should not want to work for a man who is so stupid and so stubborn.

Plus Coughlin at least has a Super Bowl ring to fall back on Lovie couldn't win the big game

The biggest issue is that by coming here, you will be forced to lock yourself into the Cover 2 scheme. If you are a DC that runs something other than Cover 2, you won't get a look.

Muly And Hanley were asking about Greg Blache this morning. What the F? Blache was a guy we were happy to get out of town...wasn't he? I remember him being a jerk with the media. He has announced his retirement, but this would be an easy hire for the bears and he could sit back and cash some checks while watching the team crash and burn.

forgive me if this has been covered, or is a stupid question, but if they already HAVE marninelli, why pay ANOTHER guy to do the same shit? just give DC to marinelli. what the fuck does he do anyway that is so different from DC? how many defensive "experts" do they need on the staff? between lovie and marinelli, isnt that enough defensive genious to go around? do they really need another guy?

Bringing back failed cast off's works really well for the Bears look at Ron Turner

It really screwed the Bears that Ron Zook wasn't fired from Illinois. He would fit the profile.

Bears still an option for Perry Fewell

Former Buffalo Bills interim head coach Perry Fewell still is considering the Bears' offer to become their defensive coordinator despite an earlier ESPN.com report that claimed he had decided to accept the same job with the New York Giants, a source close to the situation said Thursday.

Fewell still is considering both offers, the source said, and it's possible he will not make up his mind until Friday.

Not only was the Bears defense better under Blache all the players that were drafted were better too. Vasher and Tommie Harris were the only good players drafted for Lovie's system.

Nope. He was drafted during the Jauron era.

Maybe Coughlin is on the hot seat, too. Who cares? This Fuel guy is just that, another guy. There are plenty walking around who would love the job.

He's also the guy who said that Sacks didn't matter.

That's true but his team also had the most sacks of any Bears team since 1987. He said a lot of crazy shit but his defense was always good and he could always spot talent. Look no further than Peanut. He said Peanut would be a really good corner for a long time and if he didn't work out he would be an all pro safety.

Just another reason to slam Jerry. Jauron had control over his roster and had more influence when it came to the draft. Results? Better football players. Angelo got control over all of that once he hired Lovie. Results? Worse players.

I still think Peanut could be a decent FS if they could get 2 other corners who were even halfway decent.
