as a giants fan, im not all ramped up about fewell. if they dont land him, they dont land him. id never heard of the guy before last week. i guess if the giants want him i hope the get him, but i think it may be a case of 2 teams wanting him and all of a sudden he finds himself in demand and the hype about him grows and grows. he's just another guy as far as i am concerned. shit, the giants dont even run a cover 2. this year they ran a cover zero.

Now that it's official this doesn't look like a snub. Fewell doesn't have to move his family. The Giants made a better offer. They have better talent. Coughlin gave him his first job in the league.

There's so much football retardation going on in this thread I don't even know where to being. So let's start with "things were great under Greg Blache". Um, no. Things were decent for one schedule-aided season, and that bubble promptly bursted when the Bears had to play a real team in the playoffs. The Bears defenses in both 2005 and 2006 were significantly better than the defense in 2001.

There's so much revisionism about that 2001 team it's not even funny. They were a fraud from the beginning, had a losing record against the decent teams they faced, and were immediately exposed. Furthermore, Greg Blache has proven to be a failure at every stop along the way. But people act like those were the halycon days of Chicago football dominance because they now hate Lovie Smith.

mofo is right. They'll piss around for a couple more weeks now and then just name Marinelli as the DC and bring in Naked Wendy's Guy to coach the line. Then, bring in some no-name OC that Lovie used to work with in St. Louis to complete the dysfunctional band.

Muly And Hanley were asking about Greg Blache this morning. What the F? Blache was a guy we were happy to get out of town...wasn't he? I remember him being a jerk with the media. He has announced his retirement, but this would be an easy hire for the bears and he could sit back and cash some checks while watching the team crash and burn.

Not only was the Bears defense better under Blache all the players that were drafted were better too. Vasher and Tommie Harris were the only good players drafted for Lovie's system.

He's also the guy who said that Sacks didn't matter.

In fairness to Blache, his larger point was that lots of pressure and not a lot of sacks is better than only a little bit of pressure that results in more sacks overall. He's right, because despite the negative plays, you'll get ripped apart on all the plays where there's no pressure on the QB. That's what happened a lit this year. If you had a player that got pressure on every single play but never got a sack for some reason, that player would still be extremely valuable.

You make good points but you also forget that injuries happened too. Also that defense recovered and was still good. I doubt most people would blame the problems in Washington on their defense.

No, but Washington was also working within a short-window environment. They would bring in high-priced free agents over and over, not only on defense of course, but definitely they had talent. Now, the problem with that is that the window closes in a hurry and you end up in cap hell, but you should be pretty good at least briefly. But they couldn't get above decent even with that. Plus I just think Blache is a doofus that is destined to get outclassed by coaches above his pay grade. That Eagles loss will never wash off.

I should also add that I'm a lot more concerned about the OC situation than the DC situation. The defense is Lovie's, regardless of who is the DC. That was true under Rivera, it was true when Babich had play-calling duties, and it was true last year. It will be true next year. Regardless of the decision to retain Smith, once you make that decision, it's best to just run whatever plan the boss thinks is best than bring in someone that's going to second-guess everything and cannot work within the boundaries set by the head coach.

You know you can't just put talent on a team and expect it to work. Most of the time they overpaid for bad players.

Are you willing to now admit D'Angelo Hall is bad?

I think if you're going to list the faults of the Redskins organization, Greg Blache wouldn't be near the top of the list. I agree with that. I don't think he's a disaster of a coach. I do think that his one big successful year has been extremely overplayed, especially given everyone's tendency to downplay the 2005-2006 Bears defenses that were among the most statistically dominant of the decade (perhaps the most dominating over a two year stretch). And unlike Mike Tice, who is also one of these non-entity types, a Blache/Smith locker room has the potential to divide. Once you are working within a framework where Smith is the head coach, you need to maximize the ability of the team from within that framework.

Nothing. I just couldn't figure out if your inquiry about the '84 NBA draft was serious, or in line with the Heath Ledger jokes.

Had the timing right and everything, except that they got the name St. Louis coach instead of a no-name one.
