Bears receive permission to speak to Rogers

The Bears were spurned the last time they asked an NFC North team to interview their quarterbacks coach.

The Green Bay Packers turned down their request to talk to Tom Clements for the Bears offensive coordinator post.

But the Bears have received permission from the Minnesota Vikings to speak to quarterbacks coach Kevin Rogers about their vacancy, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

It's believed Rogers will do the interview later this week.

Rogers is under contract to the Vikings through next season, and Vikings coach Brad Childress can decide whether to grant or deny the Bears request. But Childress -- a former quarterbacks coach -- has generally allowed his assistants to interview for promotions.

Rogers drew interest from the University of Miami last year, and he's well-respected, most notably for his work with Donovan McNabb while at Syracuse. In Minnesota, he's worked with Tarvaris Jackson and Brett Favre in 2009.

Rogers is a good communicator, with a strong knowledge of the position and NFL offenses.

A website called Football Scoop is reporting that Syracuse head football coach Doug Marrone has "great interest" in bringing Rogers back to the Orange.

Along with the rumors that Syracuse has interest in Rogers as an OC, University of Virginia may also.

From Rogers himself - "I haven't heard anything from U.Va.," Rogers said Monday afternoon...."There's no place I'd rather live than back (in Virginia)," Rogers said. "I'm home there. I went to college there. I coached at William and Mary. I coached in Virginia Beach (Bayside High). I coached at Tech. The largest portion of my football career was spent in that state..."As you get older, things you might've jumped at when you were a younger coach, you've got to evaluate a little more now."

So basically - Fuck you Lovie and have a nice day.

While issues exist at Halas Hall, this is a chance for a guy to come in and write his own ticket.

I dont think this is the reason why Lovie thought people would come here, but you get a QB with an NFL arm, some decent WR's and maybe a couple more players at skilled positions.

You know they dont want to give anyone more than a 2 year deal, so ask for a 1 year deal.

If you suck, you are gone anyways after 1 year, if a strike happens, maybe you get 1/2 pay, but if the team is good on offense and Cutler improves, you ask for the head coaches job or you walk.

The upside is huge here. It's like a 7-1 bet! Odds are you will lose, but if you win, thats a really good day!

I'm not sure that a new guy, especially one with little/no experience at this job, is going to be allowed to run his offense. Instead, it will likely be a running style offense that Lovie stated he wants to get back to plus Tice appears to be as much an influence on next year's offense as the next OC may be.

ProFootballTalk.com's Mike Florio seems to think no matter who ends up taking the job as Offensive Coordinator of the Chicago Bears, he's likely under as much pressure as head coach Lovie Smith will be next season. Florio seems to think that he could be "one & done" with Lovie if the Bears have another bad season next year.

It's not much of a reach to believe that a losing season for the Bears next season would result in the entire coaching staff getting fired.

There is no upside to the Bears OC or DC jobs. That's why they cant get anyone interested in taking either position.
