OK, so this has been bothering me today, because it really doesn't make any sense. A foul during bowling results in a forfeiture of that ball, not of the whole frame. That means the only way you would mark it zero and move on to the next frame would be if it was your second ball. Now Smokey wants it marked an 8, which means that he knocked down eight pins. This implies that he only knocked down one or zero pins on the first ball (if it had been two then he would have wanted a spare.) Now my issue is that these are league bowlers, not fucking amateurs and it seems really unlikely that someone of Smokey's caliber would throw a gutter ball on the first ball... he is well versed in the rules of bowling and even knows how to appeal the game results, so the whole thing just doesn't add up.

This doesn't answer your question but it is some pretty good dialogue.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Dude: Walter, ya know, it's Smokey, so his toe slipped over the line a little, big deal. It's just a game, man.
Walter Sobchak: Dude, this is a league game, this determines who enters the next round robin. Am I wrong? Am I wrong?
Smokey: Yeah, but I wasn't over. Gimme the marker Dude, I'm marking it 8.
Walter Sobchak: [pulls out a gun] Smokey, my friend, you are entering a world of pain.
The Dude: Walter...
Walter Sobchak: You mark that frame an 8, and you're entering a world of pain.
Smokey: I'm not...
Walter Sobchak: A world of pain.
Smokey: Dude, he's your partner...
Walter Sobchak: [shouting] Has the whole world gone crazy? Am I the only one around here who gives a shit about the rules? Mark it zero!
The Dude: They're calling the cops, put the piece away.
Walter Sobchak: Mark it zero!
[points gun in Smokey's face]
The Dude: Walter...
Walter Sobchak: [shouting] You think I'm fucking around here? Mark it zero!
Smokey: All right, it's fucking zero. Are you happy, you crazy fuck?
Walter Sobchak: ...It's a league game, Smokey.

To truely answer your question, some of the old timers that are in my league refer to each ball as a "frame". I think its more about old tyme semantics.

DUDE: Walter, you can't do that. These guys're like me, they're pacificists. Smokey was a conscientious objector.

WALTER: You know Dude, I myself dabbled with pacifism at one point. Not in Nam, of course--

DUDE: And you know Smokey has emotional problems!

WALTER:You mean--beyond pacifism?

DUDE: He's fragile, man! He's very fragile!
