While I hope Frank is a first ballot HOFer, he was a D.H. and that may make it more challenging for him. He'll get some bonus points with the voters for voluntarily cooperating with the Mitchell Report investigation.

Frank played 56% of his games as a DH. Paul Molitor played 44% of his games as a DH and was a first ballot Hall of Famer. I'm not sure where one would draw the line but that doesn't seem like a big enough difference to me to make such a dominating hitter wait to enter the Hall of Fame.

Personally I don't understand the 'DH' argument. People are acting like being a DH is equal to cheating but like it or not the DH is a recognized position in the American League. Being a DH should not be a negative on a players career.

The tear he went on in '05 was impressive and timely.

David Wells was such a toolbag when he was here. I know... DOY!!!

When Frank Thomas was at his peak ('90- '00, the majority of his games were at 1st base.

Frank should be a first ballot H.O.F. He was one of the best pure hitters of his generation. I really dont care if he was a tool or not, even as a Cub fan I loved watching him play. It was too bad he missed the W.S., he deserved to be part of it.

I'd like to punch Giambi in his shrunken nuts for taking Frank's MVP award.

He's the best Chicago baseball player we have ever personally seen.

I think he is gonna go in as a Blue Jay

Phil, if Frank Thomas goes in as a Blue Jay, something's really wrong with the Hall of Fame. Although the HOF picks the cap upon induction, Thomas will sport the one with the White Sox silver and black.

Hands down frank was an asshole and an idiot. but that should have nothing to do with his HOF voting.

97 was his final year of playing 1B a majority of the time.

The only problem I have with the DH is the artificial creation of longevity of a player and thus the padded stats. Frank is a perfect case of a guy who lost any flexibility or ability to field at the age of 30.

If the DH did not exist would he still have a job? More likely, would he have been injured?

I am not oppossed to him getting in, even if he gets it first ballot, but when I hear someone tell me that his numbers dont compare to Andre Dawson or Jim Rice and I just dont agree that these guys are not comparable?

The HOF seems to frown upon those who have numbers that exceed those already in the hall by means of some outside influence and playing DH would be considered an outside influence.

Let me give you a Hub statement that covers all my bases. "I could see him getting in on the first ballot , but if he didn't, I wouldn't be surprised either."

I am not bashing Frank, and would not have an issue with him being a first ballot. However, when the league caught up and tossed everything inside on him? Different hitter.

Injuries + inside pitches = different hitter

But, pitchers were afraid of him, especially in the clutch. And I never saw a big guy be a better opposite field hitter.

I probably value defense more than the next guy but this is getting ridiculous. I bet if someone looked at some of the Hall of Famers defensive numbers late in their careers (Rice , Jackson, Dawson, Sandberg, Gwynn, Yount etc...) I'd bet they hurt the team more than they helped. The bottom line is would I rather have one of those guys playing a position or Frank Thomas hitting DH? I'd take Frank a million out of a million times.

Frank was the best hitter, but Ryno was the better Baseball player. Frank was a 2 tool player, Ryno was a 5 tool player.

Ryne Sandberg is not really even in the discussion.

Caught up? The fuck you talking about. Teams "catch up" on players after a month or two. Frank killed the league for nearly a decade.

Phrases like "caught up" imply some flash in the pan who is only suceeding due to an imbalance of information.

ITs really funny how many people simply want to ignore just how great Frank Thomas was because he was a DH for many years.

Ryne Sandberg was a great player, and deserves to be in the HOF and have #23 up on the flag pole. He was nowher near the caliber of hitter that Frank Thomas was.

A league rule that had been in place for a quarter century is an outside influence?

All home run numbers should be discounted because of the damn fences this new fangled league has installed. In my day a player had to hit the ball as far as he could and run the bases quickly to get a home run.

Early in his career, Frank was one of the best hitters I've ever seen. Late in his career, it seems like he realized that he needed 500 HR to make the HOF and went for more HR's.

Since he made it to 500, he is a cinch to make the HOF. It will depend on who is first time eligible the same year as Frank as to whether he is a first ballot guy.

I think B&B covered this, but it's fodder for the stat heads.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.ph ... reminisce/

His '91-'98 were historic.

Favorite moment:
A HR celebration (circa '94) where he just picks up Ventura like he's a 7 year old kid.
I think it's included in the jumbotron montage at the cell.
