Holt open to Martz reunion

Torry Holt had the best seasons of his career in Mike Martz's offense, and the free-agent receiver is open to a reunion with the new Chicago Bears offensive coordinator.

Holt was a seven-time Pro Bowler when he and Martz were with the St. Louis Rams, and it's his familiarity with the complex offense that he says makes him a perfect fit for the Bears as they try to learn the system.

"Absolutely I would consider coming to Chicago because of Coach Martz," Holt said Friday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "I have kept in contact with him over the course of the years. That's my guy. I've got a lot of history with Coach Martz, a lot of great years there obviously in St. Louis. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him as a man and as a coach. Most importantly what I respect the most is his mind. I respect his passion for the game of football. I respect the standards he sets everyday."

Holt, who posted eight straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons in St. Louis, had some advice for the Bears' receivers as they begin learning Martz's offense.

"In his system you've got to be able to run," Holt said. "That's one of the things I would tell those guys, you better be able to run, and you better be cerebral to learn, and you better have thick skin because he is so demanding. You are working with a guy who is a perfectionist. If you can't do those three things and you're not tough and you're not willing to go and block and be efficient and be quick you will not play in his system."

Holt, who will be 34 next season, spent last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Bears were reportedly interested in Holt before last season, but elected to stick with their young receiving corps.

Holt said he made it known then that he would like to join the Bears, and, a year later, he is making it known again.

"This year I would again consider coming to Chicago and helping that football team out, helping Jay Cutler in terms of helping him get settled in that offense and give him a quality and consistent weapon play after play along with Hester and Aromashodu and Knox and Bennett and Forte and Olsen, I mean the list goes on and on with the talent that they have," Holt said. "I think I could fit in really well with that ballclub and add a really good veteran presence."

Torry Holt might be able to play the role of Isaac Bruce from those Rams teams...and Hester is going to be Az-Hakim...so, who fills the role of Torry Holt...

I know this is probably going to be an unpopular stance but I can't believe that the Bears are all but giving up on Devin Hester in order to hope that some unwanted castoff WR can have a career revival.

I still think Hester is the best WR on the team or is at least top two with Bennett.

Might as well take a chance on Holt. The Bears have nothing to lose in doing so. He might be able to help the Bears WR's learn Martz's system too. Hell, Holt might even be the Bears #1 WR.

They aren't giving up on him at all. They are using him the way they should have in the beginning. Putting him in the slot is best for him and the Bears. Also I don't believe they are looking for a castoff. They are looking for a #1 guy to play on the opposite side of Devin A.

I don't think it would hurt but Holt is clearly past his prime. He would be looking to come in and play a role that he isn't able to play anymore. If the Bears aren't bringing in a #1 guy I think they should stick with the young guys.

Listening to Martz talk I got the feeling that Martz feels he's simply a return man who may get some time at WR every so often. He's not a #1 but he's still better than any WR on the team besides possibly Bennett if he continues to improve.

I think he is at best the 3rd best receiver on the team. Everything I saw from Devin A says he is the best. He is the type of target Cutler loves too. He is only 6'2" but he plays bigger than that. I think Martz was just being honest. Hester will be a playmaker next year if he can learn a few plays.

Devin A and Knox are the only guys I see being more than a #3. Bennett seems more like a possession receiver. Hester is a slot receiver. Not sure what Iglesias can do.

I'll be shocked if Knox turns into a bonafide NFL WR. To me he's a guy who got hot for a few weeks & that's it. He had more mediocre games than good games. He's small & scared to death to run any pattern across the middle. Hester should be used exactly like the Browns use Cribbs. Devin A is the only big WR the Bears have who can get physical & go up & get the ball. To me D.A. is the clear #1.
I would love to know what Cutler told Martz when they met for dinner. I highly doubt that Jay told him that the Bears are all set at WR. Greg Olsen looks like he might end up being yet another useless #1 Bears draft pick.

Jay probably told him this is a mess. Martz had NO other opportunities, and was wanted by the head coach of the Bears. Devin A is not a big, but I will not dismiss him as a number 3 at best. I want to see what happens when he is getting doubles, but I hope he is great. Many of the top line wide receivers in the game today were not top draft picks.

Also, Mike Martz was on TMZ the other day hanging out with Portia D'Rossi. He better be careful with this Chicago crowd!

You're probably right, but if thats really the case, why even entertain the thought of Torry Holt? The Bears have enough medicore receivers and Holt is only a #1 if we go back at least 4 or 5 years. They need to worry about the Oline and the secondary first and foremost.
