How does Roseanne lose to the Wonder Years and Married with Children beat Saved by the Bell?

They are right next to each other and I would think the Al Bundy camp warmly welcomes the Dan Connor people?

Wonder Years isn't really comparable to the others. It's soooo much better than 90% of traditional sit-coms.

yeah if TWY is considered a "sitcom" that cheapens it a bit. it's simply one of the best shows of all time.

Awwww yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh...

I remember watching this show as a kid, and thinking Winnie was the least cute of all the girls in Kevin's life, but seeing her now he clearly made the right choice.

What are you guys basing this on? Personal preference? Your posts both ooze with confidence so Im just wondering.

If it wasnt a sitcom, what was it?

i'm basing it on the fact that it wasn't a situational comedy. by definition it's not a sitcom. but it somehow gets thrown into "best sitcom" discussions because it was a half hour long.

the format of the show was not a sitcom format, nor was it written in the format of a sitcom (a sitcom script has a distinct format that's different from other television/film scripts).

it's a half hour drama/comedy, like "brooklyn bridge" was. and even BB had a little more "sitcom" feel to it, IIRC.

You misunderstood my question.

What are you basing "one of the best shows ever" on?

As far as it not being a sitcom... I doubt all the shows that get thrown in are letter of the law sitcoms. It was funny, it was a half hour. Maybe sitcom is the wrong term but when compairing it to other shows what would you compare it to, other than sitcoms?

it's hard to say. that's why i think the show was as great as it was. it was unique. it certainly is unfair that it's going up against "seinfeld" next because they were two completely different shows and classics in their own way. there aren't too many 30 minute shows that aren't sitcoms. but the conciseness of that show to be able to take the issues they did and compress them in a 30 minute show and do it more effectively than an hour long drama is also a testament to how great it was.

besides parts of seasons 5 and 6, the show was nearly flawless.

Word. A girl I know looks exactly like her, its uncanny. Except the one I know is a little thicker and bigger tits. She's way prudish though. Weird. Good points Zack. I liked it but I had never heard it praised like this by anyone but baby boomers. I had chalked up their love to it being chronologically nostalgic for them being children of the 60s.

no doubt "wonder years"'s main audience for the baby boom generation. but there are enough universal themes in the show that anyone could relate to.

episodes like "my father's office", "mom wars", "square dance", "pottery will get you nowhere", "the glee club", "coda", "summer song", "the family car", and "math class" are all examples of this.

for me personally i was about kevin's age during the run so i sort of literally "grew up" with this show. watching some of these episodes also provides personal nostalgia for me too.

I disagree (circle gets the square). I think the target audience would have been people about the same age as Kevin/Winnie/etc.

Wonder Years is one of my all-time favorite shows. Each episode is a heartwarming/heartbreaking coming of age show wrapped up into a neat 22 minute package, with a good soundtrack as an added bonus. Lots of potential tear-jerker moments....

I also agree w/ RPB - Wayne is a great character. Not quite the quality of a Buddy Lembeck, but pretty close.

it's too reflective of a show to target that age as an audience. a TV critic had even pointed it out, in the A&E biography of the show. it was also on prime time. and it wasn't on TGIF. and it wasn't "the simpsons".

I was just talking from personal experience. I never knew anybody my parent's age that watched it (baby boomers) but a lot of people my age watched it religiously (@ Kevin Arnold's age).

I wish I could have seen the A&E show about it. Is the series available on DVD?

Wonder Years was a nice family show. Rosanne, except for George Clooney, was terrible.

no. it's unfortunately, like MST3K, had a ton of copyright problems. there are thousands of songs they used and they can't retain the rights to most of them. because there doesn't seem to be high enough of a demand, it is only available in bootleg collections (which i have). most of them come from when it was aired on ABC family. i hope it was put together again when it re-aired in '07 on ION television because they had the entire episodes, whereas the ABC family airings were edited.

the A&E biography can be seen on youtube split into i think 4 parts:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ko-C4Ut8G-U

watching the first part again it does look like they did target this as a "family" show like "growing pains" (which was what the creators used to write for), and "the cosby show". they just innovated a different style. but i think a lot of parents watched it.

That's almost all there was growing up. Night soaps on Fridays and a few other nights. There is nothing now. You have to wait til the kids go to bed and sometimes we don't get to them. It sucks.

"Modern Family" is the only non-sports, non-news show that I make sure to watch now.
