Going to see this tonight. I've been looking forward to it for a long time. DiCaprio is one of my favorite actors so my expectations are quite high.

I have seen reviews all over the place on this one. Some like it others don't.
I'll likely wait to see how the cretins review it. Some comments were that it
was kind of confusing and the end leaves you scratching your head. I think
it looks pretty good.

I read the book, found it kinda predictable. Curious to see the movie and see how true it is to the book.

It looked interesting when I first saw a preview for it 6 months ago. They kind of overdid it on the promotions from then on and I have no desire to see it now.

Went with a buddy. And I really liked it and he hated it.

****Spoiler Alert****

I thought they could have lightened up with the dead kids and Dakow concentration camp. But I really liked the ending when I realized he was sane, but tricked them into labotomizing him before he relapsed again. I didn't get that until I heard someone talking about it on the way out!

My buddy just thought it was 2+ hours of mental masterbation

I enjoyed the movie, but I will make this undeniable observation: If M. Night Shyamalan directed this movie, it would have been roundly panned by both critics and vieweres. But because Martin Scorsese directed it, it's lauded.... Take that for what it's worth.

I thought Sir Ben Kingsley did a stellar job of creeping out the viewer, and Mark Ruffalo is starting to annoy the fuck out of me. He's kind of always got a whiny delivery with his dialog. 'That guy' Elias Koteas once again playing a creepy bad guy, and 'Kelly Leak' owns the screen when he's on it. That Leonardo guy is pretty good too, but he runs like the lovechild of Steven Seagal and Arnie Grape.

Saw it last night, and I actually liked it better than the book. It's a very good adaptation of the book while editing out some of the annoying crap.
***Spoiler alert***

The only complaint/thing that the book did better was the disappearance of his partner...the movie kinda made it look like he just left or died on the rocks. The book made this a little less clear.

yeah i didn't see it last week like i intended to.

i saw it TODAY!

with 2 other people in the theatre, it was wonderfully cavernous and the perfect atmosphere to take on this movie.

Here's the difference, Grid, about why this movie is better than an m. night film:

The payoff.

It not only makes sense, and is thematically consistent with the entire narrative, it's also not CHEAP. It doesn't throw off what you've been suspecting all along--and when everything is realized, it's not something that wasn't set up from the very beginning. Throughout the film, Di Caprio's character is plagued with nightmarish visions that explain something about what ultimately he has to make a decision about.

The film's theme about sort of being our own prisoner and torturing ourselves is perfectly answered in the end. I liked that. I like that because it's the ONLY way this movie could have worked.

The film's atmosphere is wonderfully directed and the pace is good. Unless you're actively trying to figure out what's going on (which really isn't that difficult--it does take place in a MENTAL HOSPITAL), you won't be pulling your hair out waiting for the next clue or payoff. If you let the narrative take you on the journey, it all leads you to the same place.

The acting is impressive. It's about time Kingsley does something reputable. And Di Caprio is finally showing signs of growth as an actor, showing more range AND an ability to tone down an accent enough to not make it obnoxious and over the top. Ruffalo is good, too (I don't find him annoying), and the scene with Jackie Earl Haley (Rorschach from "Watchmen") is mesmerizing. That guy is something special. Even Michelle Williams conjures up a good performance.

All in all, it's a well made film. Maybe not one you need to see more than once, but a second viewing would probably illuminate other things that could be missed from the first.

:D :D :D :) out of :D :D :D :D

I loved this movie and had to explain to a couple of people on the way out what leo meant at the end. I thought the whole time that leo was being admitted to the hospital for the first time and didn't know it. i loved the scene with the warden and leo drving in the jeep. outstanding. i started getting the hunch leo's "partner" wasnt a marshall and remembered the scene at the beginning when he couldn't get his gun out of the holster. good subliminal to look back on. 9 out of 10 for sure.

Finally just saw this. Loved it. One of the best movies I've seen in theaters in a long time.

I saw this movie last night. I was a bit sleepy, so at the end I was still unsure if he really was a marshall or if he was the Andy character that killed his wife.

The music set the mood so well from the very beginning. The ominous sounds with whatever instruments they were using were very effective. I want to see it again because I may have missed some things. I really enjoyed it though.
