Mark Buehrle to get 8th opener start

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen announced Sunday that left-handed pitcher Mark Buehrle will be his Opening Day starter on April 5 against the Cleveland Indians at U.S. Cellular Field.




It will be Buehrle's eighth Opening Day start, making him the White Sox career leader. Buehrle had been tied with Sox legendary left-hander Billy Pierce.

Right-handed pitcher Jake Peavy, whom the Sox acquired in a trade with the San Diego Padres last season, was Guillen's other possible choice. But Peavy said recently he wanted Buehrle to get the Opening Day assignment.

Buehrle threw a perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays on July 23, but he won only two the rest of the way and finished 13-10 with a 3.84 ERA

He's halfway to Seaver.

Seaver was on a lot of clubs and I don't know if it's unlikely he had 8 Openers for any of them (?)

I understand why this announcement was made, so Ozzie would not have to answer the questions about who would start.

However, I would guess Buehrle's numbers in April are not so great, especially the last 4 years, so maybe letting Jake start might not have been the worst call?

Starting Buehrle on opening day will allow him an extra days rest before his next start on sunday because of the off day on tuesday. If he started game 2 (wed) he'd have to start monday on normal rest. This season is all about getting Buehrle as much rest between starts as possible

Who really cares? Nobody ever looked back on a season and lost a division by one game and said "Well, had we only elected a different opening day starter, we'd be in the catbird seat." It doesn't really matter... you are either good enough to be good, or you are going to be bad enough for it not to matter.

Baseball season is marathon, not a sprint and there's no pitcher better at running that marathon than Mark Buehrle.

Fuck Peavy and his condescending "oh, i'll let mark do it this year". Like it was Peavy's call. Didn't Buerhle express some reservations about Peavy joining the White Sox pitching staff at one point?

Buerhle > Jake Peavy. Any and every day of the week.

And why is the point of this season to Get Buehrle as much rest as possible Keyser?

After his perfecto I believe he won 2 games the rest of the year.

Buerhle an ace????? Whatever if a cub pitcher needed extra rest youd be killing him. Also I didnt know aces were good for 10 losses pretty much every year. Keyser, youve wasted away most of your credibility by sucking off Kenny at every turn. Do you really wanna hang whats left on Buehrle being an ace? Aces dont win 2 games in 14 starts. Buehrle is a good durable pitcher, nothing more. Oh and as crazy as he is, Zambrano has better numbers.

Whenever Mark Buehrle starts a game for the White Sox, start your timers. I think a year or two ago, Buehrle started a game vs. the Indians, and it was over in a snap. About 1 hour, 30 minutes or so...

Copout? Its been years since Chicago (either team) has had the consistent productivity that Mark Buerhle's has had with the Sox.

What do you mean 'in that rotation'? Not every team has an Ace. Therea maybe 10 in all of baseball. I like Buehrle he is a very good durable pitcher. If you think he's better than Peavy (when healthy) than the idiocy lies with you. Well I wouldnt say idiocy, but you did. Anyways, Ive always begrudgingly respected Buehrle. I dont think he's a top 10 or 15 pitcher. Thats all. I wouldnt think he would be the type of guy to need the extra rest even with the workload he has had.

He's been a starter since 2001. There are very very few guys in that stretch that have been just as good, and only one that I can think right off of that has been better- Roy Halladay. Maybe Roy Oswalt, but I don't even think he's been around quite that long yet.

I'm not talking a 2 or 3 year strech, I mean I would obviously take Lincecum right now over Buehrle, but going from 2001 until now, you will not find 10 or 15 pitchers better.

Mark Grace had more hits than anyone in the 90s!

Also, I imagine it won't be especially difficult to find too many guys just barely over .500 with four point ERAs and less than 5.5 K/9 IP over the past four years. But I'm sure he'll improve next year. It's not like the Sox defense is one of the worst in the MLB, or that he's completely dependent upon the players behind him for forcing outs.

People are mistaking quantity over quality right now. 2001 2002 2004 2005 were his best years by far. Since then he has been very AVERAGE. 6 games over .500 isnt what an ace does.
