In case you aren't aware it is the Cubs new marketing slogan. It's good, right now, but as we may have seen in this town, this kind of thing can look worse over time.

Traditionally, the Cubs have not done this kind of thing. They never had to, marketing is meant to increase a presence or brand name, hopefully then resulting in more sales and revenue. They focused on existing high points, the park, the fans, etc.

Even if you like the Sox marketing in the past it creates something a team must do. "The Kids Can Play", "Grinder Rules" "Sox traditions" , when the team doesnt win I think the marketing backfires and doesn't emphasize the long term branding they want. It creates a slogan to mock the team with and I think YEAR 1 can be right in those lines.

This kind of shit makes the marketing guy look good or bad, day 1 when announced and they need to win. That is what is needed. Having a cool theme when the team starts winning is the key.

One of the most succesful such campaigns didnt start until June in a baseball season! 1979 "We are Family"! Pitt Pirates! Steve "Stan" Schanawald! Yes, before teams had a new marketing slogan each year, this is what they did. They let things develop and jumped on it.

These 'Forced" campaigns are a good short term idea, but dont hold water and make teams look foolish.

I agree that a forced slogan can backfire if the team isn't successful. If they don't have a better year, how long before people start giving them a new slogan, "Year 1...Same shit different day."

It's almost like an excuse. It's "only" year one...then only year two...and three & four...and so on. Win now damnit.

Mr. Ricketts, with me, Year 1 began in 1974, thank you very much. Thirty-six seasons of futility are enough, for Christ's sake.

Your a child! Year one began in 1967 for me. I was 10 and started to like the Cubs more then Garfield Goose who they used to preempt when the games ran long. Here is a slogan they can use:

In year one,the Wrigley urinal trowels will be deeper then our starting pitching!

My year 1 was 1988 when I was 9 and pissed off that my scooby doo re-runs were getting bumped off wgn for the cubs game, I decided to not change the channel and here I am now.

If thats really the case, then they can't use any sort of history about Wrigley Field in thier marketing.

Yeah, but Ricketts has also come out and talked about the History there, the brick walls, the ivy, no jumbotron, etc. If he really is starting over, that pretty much goes against what Wrigley is.

Sure they can. No one pays attention to that.

"Pfft more like 'Year Lost'" should've killed this the second it was suggested. Totally lame, Cubs.

See Frank. Wrigley never disappoints that why it is always used.

This is bringing in a 'Marketing Guy" to invoke some Slogan and campaign on people like Jimmy Pasta and all the reactions here are true to form.

Next thing you know, Chris Rongey is going to be making awkward commercials with Ryan Theriot.

You would think after all the worry about Y2K that the Cubs would have updated the "Years since we were World Series Champs"* clock.

While they are at it they might as well go for broke and add the fourth digit just in case.

*-For the accuracy of the joke, the 101 refers to the year after the Cubs won the World Series and were still considered the champions.

They seem to want to "use" the history and tradidions involved with the team, yet leave the years without winning a world series behind. You can't have it both ways....either we love the history and traditions and accept that there has been an unfortunate number of years since a WS title...OR....we have blown it all up and nothing matters prior to 2010. I'll take the history and tradition, even if it comes with the fact that the history shows no WS title since 1908. You take the good with the bad and accept reality. I will certainly be hoping for a change in the WS history soon. But with the way they have put this current squad together, I doubt that will come in 2010. Probably the reason for the current ad campaign...they are trying to plant the thought that this is all new...they are just starting out as owners and are in year 1, so please be a bit patient and allow us a honeymoon period. It's a bunch of crap.

You were born in 1974? Is this one of those "cubs fan since I was born" statements?
