Today former Cub all-star-Ron Santo turned 70 years old. With all the health-related problems he has endured, he was certainly a longshot to see his 70th birthday. He may be a lousy commentator, in terms of mispronouncing or forgetting names and getting facts mixed up, but he is a true Cub supporter that has passion for the game and the team. Happy birthday Ronnie.

In case you were wondering, yes, this is equally as creepy as JimmyReardon's post about Ron Reagan.

He is a great commentator....HE IS ENTERTAINING AS ALL HELL.
He is genuine...emotional...not some calculated bullshitter like Hawkeroo.

I agree with you, Bob - he is a bit meatballish, but it's genuine. Pat Hughes is the best broadcaster in the business, IMO, and he offsets Ronny's cheerleading and sometimes foggy brain

The pairing of Hawk and D.J. sure as hell was clueless.

Hawk's constant bitching and moaning about umpires sounds like some dumb ass Little League parent at Thillens Stadium who is convinced their brat is headed for a baseball scholarship to college and the New York Yankees.
Hawk kissing Reinsdorf's ass is always a treat.

i love ron santo as a commentator. its like harry was in his last 5 or so years. clueless to whats going on around him but still funny as hell and passionate about the team. both had/have GREAT partners in the booth to compliment their ridiculousness so its ok. i dont listen to the cubs on the radio anymore but i will always enjoy ron santo

On Target,my internet friend! BUT I'm a Cub fan who does enjoy Hawk when he talks about the history of the game. That is what is missing from a lot of broadcasts today.

Brickhouse during rain delays was the best for the history of the game....it was just great stuff...all of those interviews...drag somebody out of the press box or sometimes getting a manager or a player up in that booth for an hour..it was just some of the best interviewing ever.

The funniest was the day after Lou Bodreau's daughter got married. Brick had Joe Pepitone up ther doing the Godfather and both guys looked hungover.

I remember every once in awhile when "Brick" was "under the weather" and some guy named Len Johnson filled in.
Brickhouse could pound 'em down, but nobody ever was in Harry's league.

How about those televised Sunday Doubleheaders from Sox Park....Brickhouse would start the broadacasts talking about "the great Southside of Chicago and if you are DRIVING in the area, stop by and see most of game one and all of game two".
That was GREAT...there was no way you could be DRIVING AROUND THE AREA in 1965 and watching him on TV.

Things seemed better back then. My favorites were Vince Lloyd & "The Good Kid" Lou Boudreau. The guys with the toughest jobs were Jack drees & Bud Kelly doing some TV for a terrible White Sox team in the early 70's (Don Gutteridge was the manager.)

Things weren't ALL about money back then.
The broadcasts and telecasts weren't all about MARKETING back then.
A lot of us knew Brickhouse was "stretching the truth" about the Cubs, but he was beloved as the nutty family uncle.
One thing is certain, the quality of the game being played on the field was a lot better.

I think Boers & Bernstein would disagree. Today's athletes are bigger, stronger, faster. I agree with you though. With todays game lacking the African-American athlete,no way is it better then back in the 70's.

Boers and Bernstein have adopted the stathead home run or nothing nonsense...Clemente could throw someone out at the plate at Wrigley from the Totem Pole on Lake Shore Drive...modern big strong Sosa could skull a fan in the 15th row throwing to third base from right field.

African Americans KNEW HOW TO PLAY THE DAMNED GAME....Jackie, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Rickey Henderson, Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Richie Allen, Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Curt Flood, Elston Howard, Earl Battey, John Roseboro...the list can go on forever....Barry Bonds was a great athlete before the needle...

A lot of these dirt poor Latin Americans figure they have to "HIT THEIR WAY OFF THE ISLAND".
Seems like a lot of the baseball skill set these days is limited to hitting the long ball and ignoring situations.

Latins, and whites don't know how to play the game? Just a plain stupid generalizations about African Americans knowing how to play the game :(

The point was made that a lot of African American kids are not drawn to baseball anymore....Baseball is at a loss for it..
If you think this is a good brand of baseball being played from the steroid-HGH era up until right now....I would humbly suggest you put down the video games and learn the damned game of baseball....Unlike the White Sox, some players actually know what a baseball glove is supposed to be used for.
This Home Run or nothing crap is pure garbage.
I don't care what color these dipwads out there on the field are...THROW TO THE RIGHT BASE..EXECUTE A FUCKING HIT AND RUN..LEARN TO FUCKING BUNT...LEARN TO WORK A DAMNED COUNT..LEARN WHO THE FUCK THE CUT OFF MAN IS....LEARN TO HIT BEHIND A RUNNER...LEARN TO RUN THE FUCKING BASES...SCOTTY PODS...WORLD'S DUMBEST WHITE BASEBALL PLAYER!!!

Raise the mound back to 15 inches and contract to 8 teams in each league. Then you'll have that 1960's basball :P
