I think you're both wrong then. Gonzalez is younger, a Gold Glove fielder, makes far less money, has more power, higher OPS, hits better with runners in scoring position - and does all of that while playing in one of the most pitcher friendly parks in the majors.

Besides that, they are the same.

I loved your email to the Danny Mac show, Frank. Your thoughts were well thought out and showed a profound understanding of all things baseball. Well done young man.

It was a comparison of Konerko at the age Gonzalez is now.

I dont need to look up that Paul Konerko is right handed, never won a gold glove, and played in an extremely hitters friendly park.

I disagree. I won't back up what I say either.

At age 27
Paul Konerko hit .234 with 18 HR's with 65 RBI's and a .304 OBP in 137 games.

Looking when he's 26 or 28 its closer

But the left handed/ Gold Glove/ Higher OPS makes me favor Gonzalez.

Just my opinion.

My original point was the fact that he's left-handed. That's why he's over-valued. Gold gloves are nice, but he's first baseman....not much added value.

But re. the Konerko comparision...
How about Gonzalez's 162 game avg for his career:
32 HRs 98 RBI .281 Avg .362 OBP .869 OPS

Konerko's 162 game avg for his career:
31 HRs 100 RBI .277 Avg .352 OBP .843 OPS

don't get me wrong... I'll take him on my team. But the price they're talking about paying is way too much.

Has something changed with the Gonzalez story? My understanding is that is just continued speculation, not that the White Sox and Padres are actually close to making a trade.

I disagree on the not much added value. A gold glove first baseman saves tons of throwing errors.

How bout throwing some park factor in there?

Yeah the lefty thing was your original point...I disagree. I value a power handed lefty bat more.

The only argument against this trade, to me, is that you can find a power hitting first baseman pretty easily. But I think Gonzalez is a cut above most.

THAT'S MY POINT!!!!!! The reason Gonzalez is "a cut above most" is because he's left-handed.... that's it.

Exactly.

Flowers, Hudson, Jordan Danks. Absolutely. In a heartbeat.

Beckham? No can do.

He's a gold glover, even if there's not added value like a gold glove SS, there is value.

He also is doing it in a HUGE pitchers park.

Do you discount both of those things?

If you do, therein lies our disagreement.

Isn't Konerko a pretty good glove as well? It is not like Gonzalez would be replacing a bad glove at 1B.

There's not really much value lost/added going from a "gold glove" first baseman (which is really just a solid first baseman with a great bat) and a "good glove" first baseman (which isn't difficult to find). Like you said, at another position, defensive skill would be much more of a factor. But at 1st base, it's not really even considered.
And the park thing. Meh, there's definitely a difference, but I offset that with the fact that he can't hit lefties no matter what park he's playing in.
He's good. But he's only signed for 1 year...unless he's locked up for a few years, there's no reason to consider trading all your prospects to get him.

Konerko doesn't have much range, but he has saved a number of throwing errors over the years picking throws out of the dirt.

Looks to be the case. Next year is a club option, I don't know how that works with trades. If that's transferable, that would make it slightly better.... if the trade were made this year as soon as possible.

Beckham for Gonzalez?
1. Who plays 2nd ?
b. What do you Do with Paulie?
3. If you make Paulie DH what do you do with Andruw and Kotsay?
d.Do you think that's all the Padres will want for Beckham?
5. Does anyone think that just Gonzalez makes the Sox the AL representative in the World Series?

If Beckham can drive in 85-95 runs, why give him up plus one or two other guys (Hudson, Danks, or Flowers) that you will likley need as reinforcements to help you win this year? is it worth it just to get 10-15 more RBI's?

Someone earlier had referred to any fan that opposes this trade as a 'Meatball'. To trade away your best and inexpensive young talent for one short term stop gap is my opimion the very definition of a meatball.

Last night before DePaul's latest loss to South Florida, The SCORE's Brian "The Whipping Boy" Paruch mentioned in his 15 minute bridge show that Adrian Gonzalez wants "Mark Teixeira-like money" when he does become a free agent, supposedly looking for $180 million. That said, the White Sox don't have nearly the resources & revenue to make a deal like this, and I wish all The SCORE guys would put this nonsense to rest. Gonzalez isn't coming here and Gordon Beckham's not about to go to San Diego. End of story.
