Bears in negotiations for Rolle
March 4, 2010 6:53 PM | 5 Comments

By Brad Biggs

A deal for free-agent safety Antrel Rolle could be in place within the next few hours, and source with knowledge of the situation told the Tribune that the Bears are actively involved in negotiations at this hour.

That surely is the hope of his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, who would like to strike while all 32 teams are flush with money entering the free-agency period. Rolle does not have to wait until the official 11:01 p.m. opening of free agency like big targets such as defensive ends Julius Peppers and Aaron Kampman because his contract was terminated by the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday afternoon.

Rolle is the top free safety expected to be on the market and Rosenhaus told the Tribune that the Bears could be an interesting destination. They certainly have a need after coach Lovie Smith acknowledged last week that the Bears need to "invest" more at the position.

From JasonLaCanfora:

Bears, Cards, Dolphins, Giants all in the mix for S Antrel Rolle.

NFL.com senior analyst Pat Kirwan lists Rolle, along with Darren Sharper and Ryan Clark, in the top tier of free agents.
“He is a safety with corner skills,” Kirwan said of Rolle. “He can match up on wide receivers and hybrid tight ends that cause problems in the slot. He is excellent at baiting quarterbacks and playing the ‘robber’ role.”

Rolle > Peppers for me with all things considered.

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that they aren't interested in Chester Taylor.

"For the umpteenth time," McClain says, "the Texans are interested in old backs."

Just follow http://www.ProFootballTalk.com they've got the lowdown on most everything.

I'd prefer the Rams safety Oshiomogho Atogwe, Julius Peppers and a deal for Anquan Boldin - and move out Olsen for a 2nd or 3rd rounder.

Angelo knows that his ass is on the line now, as does Lovie.

It's all in for these guys, and seeing as Urlacher, Kreutz, Vasher, Dez Clark and Tommie Harris probably won't be with the team beyond the conclusion of this season, or after the lockout year or 2011 - there will be PLENTY of money to pay any free agents signed Friday - Sunday.

I'm following ProFootballTalk as well. I'm also focusing on some of our local reporters.

More from Adam Schefler:

Chargers traded cornerback Antonio Cromartie to Jets for a 2011 third-round pick that could turn to a second.

Schefter is an attention whore, he throws stuff out there to get attention. I believe he NEVER thought Cutler would get dealt last year either, and he's TIGHT with that organization.

From ProfootballTalk:

Lance Zierlein of KGOW in Houston has reported, via Twitter, that the Redskins will come "charging hard" after Peppers and that he expects a deal to be done by tomorrow. Last year, Zierlein reported that the Redskins would land defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth days before it happened.

And we're hearing that the situation has progressed well beyond the Redskins "charging hard." We're hearing it's essentially done -- and that barring an unexpected development the only question is whether the deal will be announced before or after the sun rises in D.C.

That Redskins owner loves to throw money around. Wow. He signed Hainsworth last year for HUGE money. Now he's gonna get another big money D-lineman?

ProFootballTalk throws everything out there. They get a ton of their information from guys like Schefler, and the local beat writers.

I don't understand how Hub stays in business with his PFW publication. PFW internet site sucks and who buys his publication with so much on the interenet for free? I guess he's doing ok I just don't get it.

Chris Mortenson reporting that the Browns will trade defensive tackle Corey Williams to the Detroit Lions for probably a low draft pick. Williams will play a similar role to the one he had in Green Bay prior to his trade to Cleveland.

He also expects the Lions to pursue free agent defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch, who once played for coach Jim Schwartz, the former defensive coordinator of the Titans.
