Twins closer Nathan has torn ligament.
Quote:
Updated Mar 9, 2010 10:16 AM ET
Twins closer Joe Nathan has a significant tear in the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and could miss the entire season if it requires surgery, according to a report in the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Fantasy Baseball 2010

Team officials held an impromptu news conference to announce the development, with Nathan, GM Bill Smith and pitching coach Rick Anderson.

The report says the plan is to give it two weeks rest to let swelling die down before working with trainers and trying to pitch again.

If the trouble persists, he'll have season-ending surgery.

Nathan said he'll try to come to a decision quickly.

"I'm going to do whatever I can right now to give myself the best chance to go out there and help this team out, but at the same time, I'm not going let this go on too long because at the same time, I know these guys have a decision to make, and they've gotta prepare for the season, too, so I will make a decision quicker rather than later and give them ample time to do what they have to do,'' said Nathan.

The team says it will also send results to Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion.

I'd still put the Sox as no more than equal contention with the Twins and Tigers. Twins will be in the uncharacteristic position of having to slug their way to a championship. If the Tigers question marks play well, they have a very good team. I would say that the Sox are in the good position that, if everyone returns to his average, they will be good. They will not need huge seasons.

Obviously, it helps the White Sox and Tigers, but it doesn't help the White Sox score more runs, which I think is their downfall.

I see the Tigers being quite a step down from the Sox and Twins. You can't lose as many key players (Granderson, Polanco, Jackson, Rodney, Lyons) as they have and expect to be better. I see them struggling to reach the .500 mark this season even if a few of their (many) question marks play well.

I agree. I still see it being a 3 team race to 85-87 wins till the end.

You have a wrong colored Sox under your name. I shudder to think that you have renounced your citizenship in Red Saaaaawwwwks nation. Say it ain't so, Joe (DiMaggio, who died March 8, 1999).

It still remains to be seen if the Twins were going to be able to hit in their new park. They built that team for the Dome and enjoyed such a homefield advantage there over the last few years that it will be interesting to see what happens when they are outdoors all the time - especially in April and September.

If I have a team that it going to play in potentially crappy weather for 1/3 of the season, I'd rather be a strong pitching team than a strong hitting team.

I don't understand all the love for the Tigers, and all of the 3rd place talk for the Sox. The Tigers look like they are going to win 82 games if they are lucky, and the Sox pitching staff is going to keep them in this thing until the very end.

The Twins always seem to somehow end up right in the mix of things on Labor Day so I will not count them out until they are mathematically done.

There is at least 8 or so 9th innings where the White Sox will actually now have a chance to score a run.
Nathan's lifetime against the Sox:
49G,180PA,11R,25H,12BB,54K,BA.151,OBP.212

Stoneroses,
Since I've already established that the Red Sox will once again be the best of the East, I turn my hot stove interest to the other team that I follow. Anyway, I'm proud to admit that Bacon is my new man crush.

It looks like we have a different definition of the word "again."

I sincerely worry that your long distance relationship with the Red Sox may be fizzling out. Is the thrill gone, B.B. King?

I believe that they are just a slight edge over the 2009 Cubs for divisional champs

Not sure what the Yankee definition of "again" is, but the rest of the English speaking world generally does not infer any level of recency or consecutiveness.
The thrill's not gone, but when the only spring question your team faces focuses on whether Bill Hall will get more playing time in the OF or IF, you tend to put it on auto pilot until April.

Anyway, wrong section Yankee boy.
If you want another bet, let's take it to the MLB section.

White Sox have best starting pitching by far in that Division...if they can PLAY DEFENSE behind those pitchers they should win that division.

I've looked at the Twins collection of starters (S. Baker, K. Slowey, C. Pavano, N. Blackburn, B. Duensing, F. Liriano) and what a bunch of hot garbage. They have a good, albeit lefty-heavy lineup, but they are going to have to slug and who knows how that new ballpark is going to play.

Joe Nathan being broken doesn't mean a damn thing. The Twins and Tigers are still legit contenders this season, and frankly I haven't seen enough of the Sox pitching staff to rest my season on their shoulders just yet.

The season hasn't started so he looks the same he did at the end of last season. If you are relying on spring training numbers, especially from vetarns with definite roster spots, well, then maybe the Cubs section would be more your speed.

Up yours, tubby.

What the hell is a vetarn?

Remember THIS prediction: The Sox will be near the bottom of the league in wins at home this year. Quentin & Konerko are the only REAL sluggers on this team (They need to stay healthy). They are surrounded by "Ozzie type players". "Punch & Judy" hitters don't sell tickets and will not win many games in a park built for the longball. Sox defense also nothing to write home about.

Please re-read my prediction-1 post up!. 72-90 will be the record, with the worst home record in the league. Kenny wanted power,Ozzie said NO. Ozzie wanted players molded in his image? Who is he, Zeus? (Just saw Clash of the Titans, sorry!) Punch & Judy will not work in new COMINSKI-Spelled wrong on purpose)-
