I'm still surprised he didn't sign this guy (Nady) to a multi-year deal. God forbid the Cubs sign a healthy free agent. No they need to sign guys coming off of elbow surgery, or knee reconstruction or whatever.

From the Suntimes:

BY TONI GINNETTI Staff Reporter
MESA, Ariz.--Xavier Nady played for the first time Wednesday, going 1-for-3 as the designated hitter.

But manager Lou Piniella said afterward the free agent outfielder who is coming off elbow surgery isn’t expected to play regularly until June 1.

``The trainer is thinking it will be June 1 before he can play on a regular basis because he’s coming off the arm surgery,’’ Piniella said. He said Nady, signed to a one-year deal at $3.5 million, will be available to play at times before June, though the anticipated cold weather in Chicago could dictate his playing time as well.

``He can hit,’’ Piniella said. ``If we can get him on the field, he’ll do some damage. He’s not ready to play the field yet, but I hope in the next seven to 10 days he can get on the field here.’’

I was really suprised Nady didn't sign with an AL team in order to DH/pinch hit until his arm was ready.

Does the towel drill work for batting?

Can't throw from the outfield? How is that different from Jacque Jones or Juan Pierre? Put him out there imo.

his bat should make him the first option off the bench to play. Put him in LF. Sit Soriano for 30+ games.

Put him out there and we will just make sure our cutoff man runs a little further out to meet him to throw it underhand.

Winkle-armed Cubs:

Soriano, Theriot, Soto, Fontenot

Strong or Accurate Armed Cubs:

Ramierez, D-Lee, Fuk and Milton's buddy.

Soriano should be a bench player this year. Bring him in whenever there's a flamethrower. Other than that, sit him. He changes the mentality of the team. At least he's not leading off anymore.

And yet as recently as 3 years ago there were many who viewed Hendry as the best GM in town.

Soriano might not have the most accurate arm, but his arm has been strong enough to throw several runners out.

his arm has been the only positive thing about his outfield experience

That pretty much sums it up. At least he's not playing center anymore.

Then those many people are not bright.

Your ignorant Cubs posts never cease to amaze me.

I've never heard of anyone refer to Soriano as having a "weak arm" in any way.

Name another guy in the NL that has the ability to misplay the ball, run and pick it up at the base of the wall and throw the runner out at 3rd as well as he does it? Name one! JUST ONE!!!!

That's what I thought.

And he's a Cub for another 5 years. How exciting!

Yeah I remember that too. This guy is rewarded with the third or fourth highest payroll in MLB and the roster certainly does not reflect that. I heard Bruce Levine say the other day that Hendry is still a top 10 gm. WHY ??? Is it because he kept the same pitching coach around through three different managers??

Because Bruce Levine tends to be an idiot.
