You're right that I don't really need to hear John Wall conversation, just like I'm not sure how much Ndamakong Suh conversation I needed, but that's not really the point. If a host said "I don't know who Ndamakong Suh is" in October, it would send up a huge red flag. Not having discussion about an area of marginal interest to the fanbase is one thing. But not knowing something extremely basic to a major sport is another. If someone doesn't know who John Wall is, why should I care what he thinks about college basketball in general?

Now, the response to that could be that most people don't care about college basketball, bathroom discussion is more popular, etc. I think Ken's point about not turning into WGN is pertinent, but even ignoring that, a host should at least have the most basic rudiments of the sport down. I don't watch any hockey whatsoever and I've heard of Ovechkin. Etc.
But you should know who he is.

This is basically what I was getting at back in Page 2. Mac said he should know who he is, and he should. I wont crucify him, call him lazy, etc. for it. I do think it's embarrassing if you consider yourself a sports fan(especially a sports radio host) and you dont instantly recognize names like John Wall, Pujols, Suh, Tebow, Kobe, LeBron, Manning, Sidney Crosby, Ovechkin, Federer, Nadal, etc.

Mac should go on What's My Line. He'd stump the panel easily.

He could throw out quotes like . . .

-- Large groups of people tune out college basketball, hockey, and Bears coaching talk--therefore, gas station protocol is a better topic because more people can relate to it.

-- NBA? The only way I'm interested in that is to bet the under and root for missed shots and turnovers.

-- Baseball is a somnambulent sport and daily analysis of it is tedious.

There is no way anyone could guess that his occupation is a sports-talk radio host in a major market.

If I am just a regular guy that just watches sports to eacape his mundane shit life knows about Wall and you don't then shame on you  Please document your 60-70hours a week if you don't watch college b-ball

Very Interesting thread and for the record I didn't know who Ken Wall was either nor do I care who he is.I thought he was the head coach in the T.V. series "White Shadow" ??

I have not watched 1 second of any basketball on the college level this year and for the record I can only name about 3 guys on the Bulls let alone a guy Kentuckey. Chicago is not a college town and unless your talking Big Ten football or Illini hoops it's PTFB radio in this market. You want Hoops tune into B&B as Bernstein is the best in town at it .

De Paul was exciting back in the 70's and 80's but other than that this town talks sports on a pro level on it's sports radio stations and as a consumer of sports radio for 25 years in this town I don't want to hear about college hoops untill March either.

Mac's not all things to all people but he and Spiegs entertain me for 4 hours a day and that's all I care about and the content really has no bearing on why I listen.

I can't understand why pappyscrappy and gloopan waste so much time posting in this section even though they hate Mac and "never listen" to him. Thier posts here would seem to suggest otherwise.

I very very rarely listen to B&B, and thus you will not find many posts by me in that section.

Apples and Oranges. You can still talk baseball in that section. FF posts all over the Bears section even though he's a Packer fan.

So you like the tone of his voice? The rythmn of his conversational cadence? Mackey could read the phone book and you'd tune in?

It was a great day of basketball today. I'm looking forward to next weekend, especially since I'll be off next week.

If the Bulls keep it up maybe they'll get a shot at drafting Wall.

As long as it isn't a guy that consistently sounds like he is out of breath and ready to have a grabber on the air.
Nice shot. Listening to him gasp for air is tiresome.
