No idea what causes him to cast doom and when. He didn't cast doom during the 20 minute fight I beat him. I think the game was telling me my strategy sucked since I wasn't absolutely pounding him as much as possible while he was charging his Destrudo ability. When I started making sure I was completely healed before he started casting it so I could unload instead of healing up when he started it I started to get somewhere. Still, I wonder what the heck strategy lets you kill him in 10 minutes. I didn't buff or debuff at all and none of the weapons were upgraded but all of my crystariums were maxed out.

For fucks sake this shit is starting to get old...spend twenty minutes slowly beating down an enemy only to have him pull out some absurd attack that manages to kill all three of us at the same time...

Boss at the end of Chapter 9 was epic. Just completed it, second try. First try I couldn't get past the faces because I didn't realize they buffed themselves so often. The Doom made me go 'out shit', but I managed to bump up a chain during Destrucdo, and then Stagger him after I recovered from the hit to finish him off with about 200 left on the Doom.

Did you get any stars or did you 20+ minute zero star it like the rest of us?

Chalk up another 20+ minute (supposed to be 10), zero star, racing against the doom timer win against the first boss in Chapter 10. I think I'm just too cautious or something.

So I spent the better part of yesterday backtracking to...err...a place (don't want to spoil) so I could grind out some CP and I think I discovered my problem...I've been ignoring the Synergist role...

It's amazing how much easier fights are when all your characters have haste, bravery and faith...

Say it with me now: I AM A DUMBASS

Now that I'm guessing all three of us in this thread have made it past Nautilus, what did you think of the theme there? I'm too lazy to look it up, but I'm wondering if it was the same composer who decided to butcher the beautiful chocobo music once again.

Edit: alright, they did redeem themselves with the "riding a Chocobo" music...very nice...

Did anyone end up getting the strategy guide for this, and if so, how does it compare to the guides for X and XII? I ended up buying both of those maybe a year after the fact just to have them, and was thinking about picking up XIIIs but wanted to see if it was as detailed as those were first.

I have the guide. It is not very detailed...in fact, it only tells you about the fights where you need specific strategy to get past. I've only looked at it a couple times. It seems to be way more helpful at the very end of the storyline and the 'end-game' side quests. And really the only strategy it has given me is Paradigm type stuff, and really common sense...

And I cannot fucking get past Vanille's Eidolon right now. It's tearing me up, every single time I'm a pee hair away from being able to Gestalt it.

edit: and lol @ the Nautilus chocobo music. What the hell were the vocals all about?

Well that sucks about the guide...although I'll probably still wind up buying it if I see it next time I'm out...I like having those things around...

Vanille's Eidolon...yeah, that sucked...I don't understand why they would suddenly require you to fight a battle with only two characters...complete bullshit...

I've been practicing the dual save method, and thank god...had invested an hour into an area where there is no turning back (at least from what I can tell) and I got slaughtered...reloaded a prior save right after the "holy fucking boss fight" and will probably grind out some more CP while exploring...

And I unlocked Vanille's XMB theme... 8)

Dual save? Geez I have 9 saves so far. Back on the PS1 I used all 15 blocks of a memory card with FF7 saves and another with 15 FF:Tactics saves. I actually think the guide is pretty good. There's not much you need to be guided about until Chapter 11 anyway. It's pretty helpful with pointing out grinding spots and gives good upgrading info which the game seems to completely gloss over. It's come a long way since that FF guide that was basically "go to http://www.FFguide.com/chap8/area1/boss3/stage3.html" to see what to do.

The plains in Chap 11? I love it now that I can roam around on a chocobo as well as using the teleporters you unlock doing hunts. First opportunity to make some decent cash too with the chocobo treasure hunts.

Well I killed the Chap 11 boss and I actually got 2 stars. First time I did it I think it took me 15 minutes to get him down to 1/2 health and he cast doom on me so that was going nowhere. 2nd time took 11.5 minutes out of 10.

So even though I killed the Chap 11 boss I didn't go to chapter 12. Killing him unlocked the 5th crystarium level so I used the teleport stone in Oerba you open up doing some hunts and went back to the plains. Upgraded some weapons, totally cheezed killing the mark for the hunt where you get the accessory that gives you 2x the CP, ground some CP, and now have everyone with their three primary roles maxed out waiting to start chap 12. All this achieves one of my favorite things about RPGs, being completely overleveled for fights.

^^^ I enjoy being vastly underleveled, finishing with Vaan at level 1, etc., but I guess that isn't really possible with this game?

I've heard people say they finished the game without ever upgrading a weapon or anything. I believe you can be somewhat underleveled to finish the story part, but to complete all the additional quests you need to be pretty close to maxxed.

Fighting as a level 1 Cloud in Final Fantasy: Tactics was kinda fun, but by the time you got him Orlandu could carry the whole team anyway.

It's funny...after 25 hours of "point a to point b" gameplay, all I wanted to do was finish the game...but then I did a couple missions...and built up my characters...and then actually managed to kill one of those turtles (albeit the little one...baby steps)...and almost after 59 hours, I'm not in a real hurry to keep going...

Oh, and boss fight music, ftw...

I've killed about 5 of the turtles. Sure, I cast death 5x and hope it works and if not, retry, but still killed a few.

Is that on the big ones with the tusks and chains?

I just tried fighting one agian...yeah, every time it stomps it is killing any of my characters that are on the ground...where's the float spell when I need it?

Yeah, Adamant-something. I have a sentinel out and Vanille has about 7k health. Can survive 1 stomp, but not 2. Hence the 5 casts before hitting retry. The common drop is a platinum ingot and the rare is a Trapez-something that's the catylist for ultimate weapons.

80k CP with the Growth Egg :) Although everybody's 3 main roles are maxed out and I'm at the 999,999 CP cap so I don't even need it. Throwing some into secondary roles just so it's not wasted.

Mission 55 has the egg for the reward. I'm sure I'll max everything, just haven't unlocked the last crystarium level yet. The Chapter 12 intro was pretty awesome, makes me want to watch the new Tron movie even more.

As for the Death spell I don't think there's any other use for it than the cheeze way, find something you could never kill, cast it till you die, retry.
