Man, I just watched this and it was tremendous. I'm just an old dude, but that really took me back. Some great old footage, stuff I've never seen. I never knew that they played for a USA team in 1978.

But, overall, it just reminded me of when I really loved the NBA. I don't love it now. I did then and I think it's because of some of the stuff that they pointed out in the doc, there was just more dominating personalities back then with Magic, Bird, Jordan, Barkley, et al.

Outside of LeBron, nobody in the league seems larger than life like those guys did. Maybe my perspective is different as I'm older but I just think those guys (Magic, Bird) were special. I'm sure people felt the same way about Wilt, Russell, Oscar, but these were my guys.

I agree this is a must view. I learned many things, and it was very entertaining.

The only thing it was missing was the resurgence of the "Bird's the Word" song in 1979 and the Kenny Loggins theme song that NBC used for the Tourney that year of "This Is It".

Damn. I just remembered Sidney Moncrief laughing at that song in a pregame interview (IN St. vs. Arkansas). I'm sure that dumbassed song will stick in my head awhile now as well. Thanks Doc.

Damn that was a long time ago.

Enberg, Packer and McGuire were the best broadcasting trio ever. Dick Vitale is an Al McGuire wannabe. If ESPN had been around in 1979, nobody would ever heard of fuckin' Vitale. I got to see Bird play several times when Indiana St. played Illinois St. He was unbelievable.

Yeah, it was tremendous. Nobody does documentaries as well as HBO. Liev Schreiber has made a career out of narrarating these. I remember watching that game with my dad. He loved Bird, because he had already been drafted a year earlier by the Celtics. They put a stop to that rule real quick. My dad was born and raised in Boston, and I spent the first three years of my life there. I remember how cool that Magic and Bird commercial was when it came out. Any of you 40+ guys remember Bird vs. Dr. J for the Commodore 64. It was so lame and cheesy by today's standands, but it was the best we had until Mike Tyson Punch Out came out.

Very good show. I remember growing up I had a pair of those god awful yellow and
purple Magic basketball shoes and also got some that looked like Bird's black ones
except they were blue. It was a great time to be introduced to the NBA.
