I'm sure there is probably a thread around here for this but fuck it, the search function doesn't work and I'm not going to look through 40 pages of threads to find the applicable thread, I'll let Frank do that for me

My ex-wife got me a tivo about 4 years ago. It's not an HD one, its an older model. She only got a 3 year subscription so it's been up for several months now and I assumed at this point there are far better options out there

I have Directv

I looked on their site, looks like they have a HD DVR receiver for 99$, and service is 7$ a month. I already have and HD receiver of theirs so maybe I could convince them to just upgrade for a lesser cost...since I beleive I lease the receiver and don't actually own it.

Is there anything out there non-directv based that would be a better deal?

If you aren't under a 2 year contract, I'd call up and threaten to cancel your service because Comcast will give you a free dvr. I would guess they'll immediately waive the charge for the dvr but you'll still pay the monthly fee.

Yup. BR is correct. What Direct TV has done for me in similar situations is, I have to "buy" their shit at whatever price...but then they will give me a monthly discount on my bill that is usually equal to, or slightly higher than the value.

I use the HD DVR's and they work fine. Plus, it is all in one box....and you dont have to integrate with whatever.

Just mention Comcast or AT&T Uverse....and they react to that pretty quickly.

i'm not one to complain..but it has worked out for me w/ them even when i haven't really been trying..like i called a year or so ago to bitch at them for moving ESPN Classic to the premium sports tier...i mean i don't watch it all that much but it was the principle of it mainly...and they gave me 6 months free of the sports pack without really asking

that's why i was thinking maybe i get them to give up a free or discounted DVR
