One of the best parts of the sports year is the 1st round of the NHL playoffs, IMO. Those of you that are only casual fans or non-fans, I encourage you to watch the first period of as many "Game 1's" as you can, starting tonight. Each team likes to try and set a precedent for the rest of the series, and the first 20 minutes are usually brutal. Maybe watching the first period will convince you to watch more. Playoff hockey is definitely different than regular season hockey.

When I use the word "brutal", I mean the cool, fun to watch, hard hitting type of brutal. Not the "Illinois basketball only scores 12 points in the first half of a must win game" kind of brutal.

You can't use gold that like in the hockey section. No one of any significance will ever see it.

You are spot on about playoff hockey though. It can be night and day from the regular season. I would say that hockey has it's intensity ratcheted up the most compared to any of the major sports come playoff time

I've got pitt/ott on here. Ott is winning the playoff beard battle so far. Lots of baby faces on the pens from the looks of the anthem lineup.

Quite a few heavy hits so far. Not an expert, but I'd say Ottawa just might be targeting Malkin in this one.

Did you know?

Craig Adams was born in the middle east - I believe in one of the United Arab Emirates or therebouts.

a lot less scoring up front, they lost hudler to a russian league, and hossa to the hawks. And the pieces that they added to replace that scoring(williams, Burtuzzi) aren't really known for their scoring ability...

of course as I type this they score...

Hossa sucks ass in the playoffs. So losing Hossa is no big deal this time of year.

Wings had half the team on the DL from November to the Olympics.

My bad, I should have said that it's not only the production that they are missing, it's also about the change in style of play, Jiri and Hossa added a lot of speed to Detroit's game, the loss of those two makes Detroit a lot less of a finesse team compared to years past.

Was that Jeremy Roenick shoving handful after handful of popcorn (?) in his face up in a suite at the Wings-Yotes game?

Yeah, that's probably true. Tho Miller/Tuzzi are more willing/able to check a guy into the boards and better able to handle being checked.
