An interesting read. I think the angle of thinking *he's* trying too hard is apt. He's getting old and he doesn't want to admit it or doesn't want to show it.

Quote:
There was the woofing from the Boston bench during the playoffs last season, an embarrassing display. There's the incessant trash talking and harrassment sent the way of — yeah, I'll say it — European players almost as a rule. There was the time he made Glen Davis cry on national TV because he wasn't happy with Davis' defensive rotations in a game the C's were up 20.

There's just the perpetual displays of emotion and rage and over-wrought warrior-isms, and it's tiring. That's always been part of the K.G. package, he was always the last to leave the shower, always the first to step into in-game mode before the game actually started, but never to this degree. This isn't just the difference between Minnesota and Boston, and it's certainly not just because of the difference in how many games K.G.'s teams are winning these days. Boston was .500 over the last three-and-a-half months of the season, and those Timberwolves teams piled up their fair share of wins a few times.

So why now? Why this sudden regression into, dare I say, childish petulance? Well, you've seen it before.

He's a lion in winter.

He's older, the legs aren't there, the hops have hopped out of him and he's scared. He's insecure, he's never had to play basketball like this, he doesn't like it and he's lashing out. He's the basketball version of a distinguished gentleman suddenly turning into a right old coot in a senior citizen's home, treating the help like dirt for reasons that don't go beyond the fact that the distinguished gentleman needs help, now.

K.G. needs help, now.

He really wants another ring to cement his legacy, just gonna be really tough for that
team to go to the Finals. KG was my favorite player when he was in Minny and I was
happy for him when he got his ring with the Celts, but he sees and feels the end and
he doesn't like it. He's had a hell of a career and has been a pretty stand-up guy and
stayed out of the headlines off the court. It's a tough business and there is only so
much you can do by yourself, as evidenced by his years as a Timberwolf.

Garnett is a dirty player. Period. Woofs when he's up. Grabs, holds, whines, moans. Go away. And take Kendrick Perkins and Paul Pierce with you.

Hes a crybaby who couldnt win anything until he had two all stars with him. Hes always been a punk. Even when the Wolves finally won a couple series he couldnt close.

This epic Game 7 box score disagrees with you.

As for the article, I think it's a bit harsh. Garnett was the clear catalyst for the '08 Celts and KG has always been as passionate a player as there is. There certainly is some truth to the fact that he's struggling to deal with his newfound physical limitations, but I dont think he's "regressed into childish petulance". Like I said before, I dont even fault him all that much for the elbow he threw given the situation.

It would have been nice to have a follow-up picture of an open-handed, Rick James slap to the face of that psychological nightmare (Garnett).

Ok, so he had one good game. He lost a lot more. I just never understood the sympathy like he had no help. He had as much help as a lot of stars. He just couldnt win.

You really think he had as much help as other stars? Take coaching into account, as it definitely matters. I dont think he's played with at least an average coach his whole career. Spree and Cassell? Rasho Nesterovic, Joe Smith? Those MN teams were garbage. I dont think he's had nearly the supporting cast that stars from this decade have had that have won titles(Wade being the only exception). He would have 3 titles by now if he had switched places with Dirk back in 2000.

The year with Spree? Maybe he wasnt in the best situation but ive never seen a star get the "He cant do it by himself" treatment so much.

Well I think it's true to an extent. I admit that KG is best used as a Scottie to someone else's MJ, but he really had historically bad coaching/management for 10 years. That's almost unheard of in this league, and I think one of the more under-talked about aspects of his career. And yes, the year with Spree I think his surrounding cast wasnt that good at all, he just played to his absolute ceiling that year, sorta culminating in that epic Game 7 performance that kinda put that reputation of him out of my head, at least.

i can see both sides of the argument. speaking of the Minnesota years, I always felt he should have been more aggressive. i think part of his problem was that he wanted to be magic johnson...i felt he took way too many jumpers, he should have utilized his size and speed far more and should have shot way more FT's. there were way too many games where he only got to the line like 4 times. plus, he signed a pretty gigantic contract for someone who you said was better suited as someone's pippen, so that kind of hamstrung the team as far as what help they could get to put around him. add in mchale's brilliant joe smith move which cost them draft picks and the surrounding cast was NOT good at all. wally was an all-star (god i can't believe that) for one year and then sharply fell off. he wasn't a bad foil as an outside shooter but his defense was horrendous which pretty much negated any good things he brought to the team. not that the West is bad now, but I think it was at it's absolute peak during KG's years....it didn't help that they repeatedly drew the Spurs and Rockets in the first round. i blame Garnett for a lot of things during those years as explained but I still think he's one of the most uniquely talented players ever in the NBA and i'm sad that he didn't get more of a chance to win a title during his prime years
