I never really liked Reggie Jackson.
I understand your love for all things Yankees, but this is not related. I would guess that Reggie's contract in years and total amount of salary was nowhere near the level of money the Cubs have to pay Soriano. The 1970's was a completely different era for players. When Reggie went to the Yankees you were witnessing the beginning of free agency. Prior to that, ownership OWNED the players. There is a huge difference in the mindset of a player being owned and a player from today that has ownership under his thumb (I would use a different phrase, but don't want to offend).

I respectfully disagree. Regardless of what a player is being payed, you play the game properly or you don't play. It is not as if Soriano is a star player who is carrying the Cubs on his back.

Reggie Jackson was an established star in 1977. Believe me, pulling Reggie Jackson out of the outfield in the middle of an inning was a pretty big deal, even in 1977. A lot bigger deal, I would submit, than sitting Soriano, who is essentially a piece of garbage.

What was the length of Reggie's contract? That matters. What was the prevailing attitude of players in the 1970's...just what you are saying. You play properly or you don't play. Like it or not, that is not the case in today's baseball.

Look, how much did an agent make for helping Reggie in the 1970's? How much is that agent going to make for Soriano today? The agents are in the business of telling a player how great they are. So are all of the other hanger's on to a major star. Like it or not, Soriano is still a major star hitter for the Cubs. They don't have many options with the guy. They have to figure out how to get the most out of this guy for the next what 4 years? Reggie's contract was nothing like this albatross. Reggie could sulk all he wanted...for about 2 games before he needed to perform for his next contract. Soriano doesn't have the same motivation.

Lou was on that team wasn't he? Give Lou credit here people. This is a full blown mess. Trust me, if this was the late 1970's Lou would have yanked Soriano's ass from 2nd base yesterday. It is not the same game. Brenly can talk big all he likes from the booth. Truth is if he comes into the dugout tomorrow and pulls that move and Soriano loses that little bit of confidence he has (yes, I do think it is razor thin) and becomes a basket case for the next couple of years the Cubs are toast...and so is Brenly. He just wasted a $90 million asset for ownership. That will not sit well with anyone including Brenly.

Reggie Jackson signed a five (5) year contract in November, 1976 worth 2.96 million dollars!

That equals about 1.2 billion dollars in 2010 dollars.

I do not believe Thurman Munson cared much for Reggie Jackson, and neither did I.

Read my post again. I said that Ricketts should have fired Hendry, Lou, & the entire coaching staff.

So you see a future with Hendry & Lou? You see things looking up for the Cubs?

Don't worry. While this IS a lame duck, throwaway season, don't think that Ricketts hasn't already been planning to clean house prior to next season.

I predict that Lou and Hendry will be done the day after the regular season ends.

I do not think that is right. I think it is still worth less than the Alex Rodriguez deal.

Well, I am caught red-handed. I thought I could fool everyone by completely fabricating an inflation adjusted amount of 1.2 billion dollars. Are you some kind of CPA?

The feisty Billy Martin, if he was still living, would probably fight you for comparing him to Bobby Cox. Then he would probably fight Bobby Cox, which would likely cause Bobby Cox to allegedly get drunk and allegedly beat his wife.

The great Billy Martin also suspended Reggie Jackson (not a true Glorious Yankee) in 1978 for bunting against orders. In the ensuing controversy, Billy Martin called Jackson a liar and The Boss a convicted felon. Of course, this led to The Boss forcing Billy Martin to resign.

An interesting side note: if not for Billy Martin and Toots Shor's, Mickey Charles Mantle would probably have hit 800 home runs.

My Lord, those were fun teams to watch as a youth.

Forgive me StoneRoses 28. I was only referring to the pulling an outfileder mid inning. Myself and Bagels were just discussing how certain fans (some would call them meatballs) love to reference this play.

As usual when a baseball anecdote is shared you can rest assure a Yankee has aleeady done it Bigger and Better.

It was a sad Christmas night for this youngster when Billy left us.

This is not going to turn into a Billy Martin thread. Billy Mays was 10x more influential than Billy Martin ever was.

No, this is what you said:

You said both things. Blowing the team up would mean unloading all of the garbage they are carrying. That would probably mean eating close to $100 million dollars because nobody is going to pay 100 cents on the dollar for any of these guys.

Cleaning house would mean firing the coaching staff and front office. It's pretty obvious you meant both. And what would just firing the coaching staff do? If they brought in Joe Torre (or whoever), is Soriano going to suddenly not suck?

I can not believe what I have just read. You are either trying to get a rise out of me, or you are hopped up on drugs. Typically, I do not mind if people choose to poison their minds with drugs, as long as they are not driving my son's school bus or making my dinner.

I will bet you anything, including your broken television, that Billy Martin sold more Miller Lite beer than Billy Mays has sold Mighty Putty.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_zDcQV6_6k

Also, I guess I forgot about the fact that Billy Mays must have also:

1. Played more than eleven (11) seasons in the big leagues;
2. Was more than a four (4) time World Series Champion as a player;
3. Was a multiple World Series winning Manager;
4. Managed for more than sixteen (16) big league seasons;
5. Compiled more than one thousand two hundred fifty three (1,253) wins as a big league Manager;
6. Had his number retired by the most Glorious sports franchise in recorded history.

Now go get your shinebox.

Oh, I forgot. I am certain that Billy Mays also hung out with major "A" list celebrities at the Copacabana and Toots Shor's. Do you think that Billy Martin needed a reservation at these upscale establishments? Your answer should be - Yes, he did need a reservation: it was called flashing his World Series rings with a big diamond "NY" logo!

I am sure that Billy Mays could have moved to the front of the line at the Copacabana if he gave the doorman a tube of Mighty Putty or a bottle of OxiClean.

So you state that a commercial pitchman is "10x more influential" than a multiple World Series Champion player and manager, and I am a crackpot? That is the hardest I have laughed in months!
