Yeah he did a nice job. He looks horrible though, like he has already been embalmed.

The skin pigmentation of his hands made me think he's spent much of his ample recent free time being basted and roasted in an oven. There was a certain Thanksgiving Turkey look to him.

he was o.k. at best.

good to hear him from a nostalgia standpoint, but that was about it.
He got clipped by Fox 3-4 times going into commercial break. His coments going into break were weird at best..."there's a look at the sun they're looking at." He often didn't comment on anything presnap re: formation....and rarely gave you any play by play b/c he's too slow to keep up with the action. however, it was nice to not have three guys yelling at me constantly.

typical play:
"Grossman.....(4 seconds of silence)......out to Jones...(3 seconds)....gain of seven."

between his slow deliberate delivery and the game being over by Halftime, i was bored out of my skull.

I thought Pat had trouble assessing what was going on in front of him. I don't think Fox should put him on anymore.

He was the only guy who made Madden listenable. That's talent.

I like his simple style. He's got an authoratative voice. Alot of anouncers want to talk all the time. He makes the call and then you here the crowd.

Pat- Grossman...Clark...Touchdown

Meat Head color man (Baldinger)- You know this is a blue collar town. Payton ran hard here and never ran out of bounds. Singletary had the eyes. Blah...blah...blah.

I agree Beardown. Too often these NFL announcers are constantly blabbing on about some crap and refuse to let the game have a second to breathe. One of the reasons I like baseball on tv so much is because announcers tend to be a little slower and say less. I did miss Summerall's voice though and think it was a great change of pace.

Exactly! If this was radio, I would have a problem with his style.

Agreed. I liked it.

I fully expected him to be awful based on what I'd heard of him toward the end of his last run. But, I thought it was good. It's TV, I don't need him talking my head off. Maybe it is the nostalgia of it, but if he can keep that level of performance up, I'd be happy to have him do more Bear games.

I think Pat did an admirable job, all things considered. Of course Baldinger did his best to sound like a complete genius, but if you ignored him, Summerall did a fine job.

I actually like his style of letting the picture tell the story. I didn't pay three grand for a hi def TV so that I would need an incredibly dense play-by-play call. I'll also go ahead and agree with those who have said that there was something oddly comforting and familiar about his voice, especially after him not calling a game for however long it had been prior to yesterday.

And the former voice of the XFL.

I liked hearing Summerall, and thought he did fine. There were no dementia-like pirate references.

After Baldinger mentioned Grossman "having a bad game in Arizona two weeks ago, and he knew it", 3 times within the first 5 minutes of the telecast, I put on Joniak and Thayer.

And i never knew Summerall was a crazy drunk, he should talk about that on air.

correction: he was a badass.

and harry was kept around basically for the same reason santo is- thats his life. harry was well past his prime, and probably shouldnt have been doing all 162 games the last few years he was with the cubs.

That, and the statement is factually incorrect. Naperville's finest, Harry Kalas is the closest modern approximation to Facenda. In fact, I actually slightly prefer Kalas over Facenda, but that's just my opinion.

I love all this talk about Summerall "letting the picture speak for itself" and how his "old school" style is refreshing. He's an old, already deceased man. It's not style, it's called dementia & cataracts, not to mention the whole embalmed thing.

I'm all for not having an announcer narrate every little thing that happens on a television broadcast, but don't give Summerall too much credit when in reality he's just too old and slow to keep up with the game.

I don't care if he gets credit or not. As long as I have an actually listenable football game that's all I care about. Compare it to Berman yelling like a fool all the time and the crap soup that is the MNF crew it was a huge breath of fresh air relative to those.

I was glad when he retired and Sunday's broadcast did not change that. For those of you who enjoyed it - was it a sentimental thing? Or did you think he retired to early?

Spaulding, my experience with him coming back this Sunday was similar to what many have posted a couple months after Silvy and Carmen got booted from middays. The grass looked greener at the time with Salisbury and Rosenbloom but after experiencing it they were pining for S&C.

When he retired, I thought it was overdue. He was painful to listen to at the end. But, I didn't find that to be the case on Sunday. I know there was talk that he didn't know what was going on. I didn't find that to be the case.

Every play by play man makes some mistakes. I think the sentimentality had something to do with it and maybe if he does more games he'll be exposed as clueless.

But, I liked the minimalist style. If you want to say that was because he's old and clueless, I don't care. He still keeps his commentary brief. The new guys talk too much, try to setup the color man too much.

His problem is being paired with Baldinger. Pat gives his color guy time to give some input. He just isn't going to necessarily lead him there and Baldinger is weak.

Sorry Doug. I hadn't gotten to this thread yet, but I think my girlfriend would have killed me had the game gone on much longer with me yelling out "that was _______ you 90 year old dumbass not _______" (fill blanks with any name of any player on either team) I'd had enough of the nostalgia about 5 mintues into the game. The man is was just clueless. I've already got my crap lined up for him for Thursday.
