I'm reposting this here because no one reads the Mully and Hanley section.

I listened to the last hour of this Mully and Hanley show and they have some dumb callers.

A guy from Nebraska said that the Big Ten wouldn't want Nebraska because if they let them in that Nebraska would steal recruits from every other school because they were "in the Big Ten". They'd be as good as Ohio State because "Nebraska is a football palace".

Another guy called and said that all the small schools like NIU and other schools should get together and create a conference to rival against these super conferences instead of just being a lesser conference.

Others called and said "Missouri does nothing for me, why not make a big splash and get Texas and Oklahoma". Great idea! I'm sure the Big Ten administration said "Well, we could have Texas and Oklahoma but you can't pass on a chance to take Missouri".

Another caller said that they should do a European soccer style confusing system where teams change between the upper and lower division of the conference on a yearly basis depending on how well they play. Yeah, I'm sure that the current Big Ten schools that aren't football powerhouses are going to love sitting in the lower division year after year.

Another caller said that they should simply form a 96 team super conference.

They did make some fair points about Rutgers but I think people underestimate the sleeping giant that they are. New Jersey is traditionally able to produce good talent and so does Pennsylvania. My guess is that Rutgers will also find a way to play more basketball games at Madison Square Garden which will be damn cool and they'll build a new stadium for them too. Right now, Rutgers doesn't look like they improve the conference but I think you'll see them with the biggest bump from joining the Big Ten.

I heard a caller "who works in the health care system" state that Tiger couldn't have gotten an MRI on the night of his injury because no one dictates when the doctors work.

So doctors, traditionally some of the biggest golf enthusiasts of any profession, wouldn't fight each other to run over to the hospital to meet Tiger Woods...and the PGA doesn't hold enough sway IN PONTE VEDRA BEACH no less, to get their star medical treatment at a moment's notice.

It seems like Mully and Hanley get a different type of meatball caller than the other shows. They get the "I'm a low level employee in an industry and therefore can speak for that industry" types.

That's pretty good too.

So I guess that emergency rooms are only open when a doctor wants it to be?

As you can see from the activity and views in this thread, there's really not much demand for college football talk. But I had to hear another mention of Ross-Ade Stadium on Chicago radio today. You know, if I wanted to hear about John Wall, I'd move to Lexington and if I wanted to hear about Joe Tiller I'd move to fuckin' Battleground, Indiana. PTFB radio indeed!

One of the biggest stories today has been about Big Ten expansion even when it's all rumor at this point.

I think you are wrong. College football sells well in Chicago. College basketball doesn't.

Of course the Big Ten thing is a big story. And naturally it should be covered. My point is that demand isn't necessarily driving what these guys choose to talk about. Doug pointed out that no one in Chicago would be interested in Astros or Redskins talk. I agree and further submit that- no offense here, Rick- not many Chicagoans are interested in Purdue football (unless they went there or they have a kid who goes there). Mac discusses the Boilers because they're "his" team. Talking about the Illini or Northwestern or Notre Dame is one thing. If you're going to constantly bring up Purdue, you may as well talk about Penn State or Staford- or the Astros and Redskins.

And I'll disagree with you that college football is bigger in Chicago than college hoops. It all depends on the teams and how they're doing.

He was discussing his personal experience and it happened to mention Purdue. I've never heard him even mention this years starting QB or the coaches name. He has some connections to Purdue and he found it relevant when reminiscing about when he used to go down there for games.

When he starts breaking down Purdue's chances to make the Motor City Pizza Bowl then you'll have a better case. Simply mentioning Ross-Ade stadium and Leroy Keyes isn't really discussing the actual game. I hear Dan Bernstein talk about his time at Duke a lot but it doesn't mean that he's actually programming his show with Duke basketball. I've included things about my times in college in discussions too.

And seriously, please tell me when he starts breaking down Purdue's chances next season.

Actually, I think danny goes out of his way not to discuss Duke, unless it's in the context of what a vile human being Coach K is. And that's amusing no matter where you are.

Mac is a fan of Purdue football. I get it.

I did hear some caller talk about Iowa State surprising the world every 5 or 6 years....if it truly was Iowa State, it would be more like 50 or 60 (I'm guessing he was talking about the Hawkeyes)
