I'm not sure there are a lot of fans of this show here, but NBC has cancelled the original "Law & Order", a fixture on the "Peacock's" schedule since its debut in 1990. Deadline.com reports "L & O" creator/executive producer Dick Wolf is furious with NBC bosses for what he felt was the network reneging on an agreement that would end the long-running legal drama after next season and relocate it permanently to TNT, where reruns air all the time.

Wolf is furious that NBC and Universal Studios, the show's distributor, reneged on a 16-episode deal for what would have been a record 21st and final season of the legal drama that was originally agreed to in March. It's believed that the studio was going to negotiate a new deal for the original "L & O" to relocate to TNT, in which the TimeWarner-owned cable channel would've also financed new episodes of the series. NBC supposedly balked at TNT's plans for such financing and "Peacock" bosses demanded Wolf "finance the pickup of 'Law & Order' out of all the money's he made." Reps for Wolf said "Never going to happen," according to an insider. The original "L & O" ends up tying another long-running show, "Gunsmoke", as the longest-running shows in TV history. "Gunsmoke" originally aired from 1959 to 1975 on CBS, while "L & O" ran from 1990 to 2010 on NBC.

While Wolf may still try to negotiate a new deal with TNT for the original "L & O" to continue there, consider this. He still has "Law & Order: SVU" & "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" still very much on NBC's lineup, along with a new spinoff this fall called "Law & Order: Los Angeles". In recent years, the above spinoffs "SVU & "Criminal Intent" have aired first-run episodes on NBC Universal-owned USA Network before finding their way to NBC themselves.

That's actually kind of sad.

The show was pretty bad for about 5 years, but the last two seasons and the cast they have currently assembled is really good. I was hoping they could get at least 1-2 more years of new episodes.

The one thing I know about the show is that the cast always changed during the show's 20 year history. The average "Law & Order" cast member lasted only 3 seasons, and dealing with Dick Wolf was said to be difficult.

Anthony Anderson is better than the chick they had on for a couple years, and I would rate him above Dennis Farina also. Jeremy Sisto has been great since he joined the cast, and the current legal people they have on the show have been solid.

Anthony Anderson surprised the hell out of me with his acting in this series. When I heard he was going to be the new cop, I was pretty pissed. But I have to say he has done a really good job in that role.

The guy from Clueless is pretty good too...

I agree. I thought it was laughable when they originally brought in Anthony Anderson, but him and Jeremy Sisto seem to work really well together.

The delivery was so off and just bad. It was like an 8 yr old in a school play.

I sure hope there's some other way to catch old Law and Order episodes. Maybe sandwiched in between showings of "The Shawshank Redemption".

TNT airs "Law & Order" reruns all the time, Peoria Matt. I think what has Dick Wolf really upset is that NBC and Universal Studios Television had a deal in place for a 21st season of the popular legal drama and he believes network bosses reneged. Ratings dipped as well, which is never a good sign for a show's long term health.

I finally caught the finale last night. I thought it was a great episode, but it wasn't filmed to be a series finale. They were cancelled after they filmed this.

McCoy had a great scene and was ready to fuck some lawyer up. Some school union lawyer was telling his client (who may have information about a possible attack on a school) to not talk. McCoy was having none of it. It was nice to see he finally woke up for the first time in about 2 years on the show. The clip is below.

I'm going to miss this show. It has always been reliable for all the years it has been on TV. It did lose it's fastball for a little while after Brisco died, but I really think it was was much better the last two seasons. I don't like SVU or CI, and I think it's a shame that the original series is getting the boot and not one of the others.

yeah the original "law & order" was a solid show. got predictable and recycled at times but after so many years on the air, what can you expect? it brought a good cast of characters and colorful stories and i always enjoyed the format.

good run. kudos.

The thing I liked about the show was that it was always 100% about the case. It never delved into the character's personal lives. We never had to worry about Brisco hooking up with Van Buren, or any of that shit.
