Maybe I am making a point that everyone knows about, except Mike North, about why Angelo does these signings every year.

Let's say the Salary cap for the team this year is $90M and the Bears have used $85m. They can use another $5M versus the cap this year.

So they sign McKie for 6 more years and give him $3M today, and then they have the contract on him for maybe $350K every year. Thus if he develops into a bonafide impact starting FB, only $350K goes against the Salary cap!

Numbers are Hypothetical of course

If you Remember he has done this with Quasaim Mitchell. He give him $1.5M. If he developed into a good LT, it would have been a steal for the next 3 years. Mitchell had quick feet and that was what Angelo liked on the kid.

These types of signings are great risks. It's cap room that just goes away of unused. So he gives the money players now as Bonuses hopong he gets a great deal on these guys later.

I thought signing bonuses were pro-rated over the life of a contract.
