After the top 3 picks this a wide open draft. The draft is loaded at the top with a bunch of pitching specifically with college pitching. There is a shortage of college bats but some pretty good high school bats. Here are my first 16 picks:

1. Washington- Bryce Harper C/OF. Duh.

2. Pittsburgh- Manny Machado SS. Has drawn comparisions to A-Pud (pre steroids).

3. Baltimore- Jameson Taillon RHP. Annual Texas high school fireballer. Should make a great future rotation with Matusz, Tillman and 2009 1st rounder Matt Hobgood.

4. Kansas City- Yasmani Grandal C. Very good 2-way switch hitting catcher. KC could have a hell of future with Butler, Moustakis, Hosmer and Grandal.

5. Cleveland- Drew Pomeranz LHP. Absolute steal at #5. He could be in the Indians rotation as early as the middle of next season and will form a very good 1-2 with last years top pick Alex White.

6. Arizona- Chris Sale LHP. Isn't as polished as Pomeranz but has just as much if not more talent. Should be a top of the rotation starter for a long time.

7. New York Mets- Deck McGuire RHP. The Mets would love for Grandal to fall here but that's not going to happen. McGuire has excellent command of 4 + pitches and should move through the Mets system very quickly.

8. Houston- Zack Cox 3B. Best college hitter in the draft. Plugs one of Houston's many holes.

9. San Diego- Micheal Chioce OF. Put up unbelievable numbers at a small college. Very good hitter with + power and has enough arm to play RF.

10. Oakland- Josh Sale OF. Big time power hitting high schooler. Good outfielder with a very strong arm but may grow himself into a first baseman.

11. Toronto- Nick Castellanos SS/3B. Another power hitting high schooler with + speed. Profiles more as a third baseman.

12. Cincinnati- Christian Colon SS. Cincy is in need of a franchise SS and this one falls into their lap. An outstanding defensive player with a plus bat.

13. Chicago White Sox- Brandon Workman RHP. There is little doubt the Sox will draft a college pitcher (though high school OF Austin Wilson is a possibility) and there are plenty to choose from. Workman is a big, strong, durable pitcher(6'5" 220) with a big time fastball and sharp curve. Workman also features a solid changeup and + command with a pitches. Other possibilites incude Asher Wjocechowski, Alex Wimmers and Austin Wilson.

14. Milwaukee- Barrett Loux RHP. He's moving up the draft board because of hs size and very good mechanics. Has 4 + pitches but needs to work on command and consistency.

15. Texas- Karsten Whitson RHP. High schooler with a very good sinker and solid mechanics. Scouts think he can add velocity when he grows in his 6"4' frame.

16. Chicago Cubs- Alex Wimmers RHP. If Cashner stays in the bullpen the Cubs could use a starter and Wimmers may be the most polished pitcher in the draft. Not overpowering but he possesses excellent command of 3 + pitches. Will be a fast mover and could find his way into the majors as early as 2012. Other possibilities include Wojociechowski, Matt Harvey and Anthony Ranaudo.

I would LOVE if Minooka fireballer Mike Foltynewicz was stll there for the Sox 2nd pick at #63 but unfortunately he'll be long gone. Foltynewicz should go somewhere in the sandwich round (33-50).

How good will the Nats be in a few years? Isn't Harper the kid who dropped out of HS a couple years ago so he could turn pro. The kid hit 30 something HR's in like 60 games at a junior college. Those are video game numbers. What would it take to trade for the rights of a player like that?

The Pirates went for the pitcher Taillon. Not too surprising because he's filthy. Baltimore went with Machado. In a bit of a surprise KC took SS Christian Colon.

I think baseball has the rule where a player cannot be traded until a certain date and only if a contract agreement can't be made.

Cleveland took Pomeranz. That's the one I wish I'd gotten wrong. That guy's going to be a monster.

I assume this doesn't happen often because most of these guys are hit or miss. They look like they will be the NL version of the Rays in the next few years and they don't have to worry about the Yankees or Red Sox.

A drafted player can't be traded for 1 year after he signs his contract.

There is no way Billy Beane passes on Zack Cox.

Beane took Choice. Cox must be asking for a TON of money but as a draft eligilble sophmore he can do that. That's what kinda sucks about the baseball draft, the players have ALL the leverage.

Toronto took McGuire. Damn.

I think that is a fair estimate, and I think once some of the pieces are in place, that would be a good job for Joey Cora as a manager.

Cincy took C Grandal. That leaves LHP Chris Sale and 3B Zack Cox for the Sox to choose from. I would be THRILLED with either one but they need a pitcher.

This is a head scratcher to say the least but the Cubs have made good 1st round picks the last 4 years so maybe they see something nobody else sees.

That's what they asked Jim Callis and he said they must have thought someone else was in on him. If you like a guy there is no reason to wait. Go get him.

TB took OF Josh Sale. Judging by their track record he'll be a 10 time all star and future hall of famer.

Holy shit! Foltynewicz went #19 to Houston. Most had him going in the sandwich round. I saw this kid pitch twice. One scout told me he hit 96 on the gun. He's not stepping foot on Texas' campus.

I hate his arm slot. I hate pitchers who come from 3/4's.

Randy Johnson was pretty good throwing from 3/4's.

Figures that Minnesota takes Wimmers. Gibson last year Wimmers this year. Sheesh.

Johnson also threw nearly 100 mph....Sale is a 91 mph pitcher.

The Cards took Zack Cox. You should be a very happy man, Lipid. This guy can flat out rake.

Fastball movement: It's got lots of sink, generating a ton of ground balls.

Curve: It's got a sweepy slurve break, a potential wipeout pitch to left-handed hitters. It has some lateness to it.

Changeup: It's a good pitch with a chance to be a plus offering. He uses it typically against right-handed hitters, and there's some action and life to it.

Control: Sale is a strike-thrower who doesn't hurt himself with walks.

Poise: It's a plus, all business on the mound, with nothing rattling him. He's got perhaps the best mound presence in the class.

Physical Description: Sale has a skinny, gangly, Andrew Miller-type body.

Medical Update: Healthy.

Strengths: Three above-average to plus pitches, outstanding mound presence and excellent command.

Weaknesses: His slot, low 3/4, isn't typical for a starter. His frame will lead some to be concerned about durability.

Summary: Sometimes good things come out of smaller schools. Sale took a strong Cape Cod League performance and carried it over into his junior season. With the chance to have three outstanding pitches, all of which he can throw for strikes, to go along with outstanding mound presence, Sale has developed into one of the better lefties in the Draft class. Teams will have to look past a less than prototypical arm slot for a starting pitcher, but with the way he's pitched, it seems likely a team will do that at some point in the first round.
