Nationally, however, it was a different story. Sunday's Hawks game garnered a 4 overnight rating (4.8 million households) on NBC; the NBA Finals game drew a 10.9 rating (13 million households) on ABC

The NBA is once again stealing the NHL's spotlight.

NBA used to draw 20+ ratings, 1988 Lakers vs Pistons and 1998 Bulls vs Jazz Finals.

NHL has never had ratings in the U.S., and likely never will. Image

Overall ratings for everything including Sitcoms, Reality nonsense, Sports, and nightly news are down compared to 10-15 years ago. This can be attributed to a lot of things, but IMO mainly is due to the internet and DVR. DVR recordings arent included in ratings shares. On a side note, my favorite show Heroes was scapegoated and canceled due to low ratings, but no one seemed to mention the universal lack of ratings experienced by all networks (It was the most downloaded show on the internet with an estimated avg of 600,000 downloaders per ep). Stupid NBC.

The NBA is a much better product than it was immediately after Jordan left. The NHL was really picking up steam before Bettman canceled the 06(?) season. I guess one could say it has gotten it's sea legs back, but maybe Im looking at it from a Chicago perspective.

Unfortunately the corrupt refereeing in the NBA has really hurt it's popularity of late. Dont know enough about hockey to make the same analysis, but from what I heard, the refs left something to be desired throughout the NHL playoffs.

Without a doubt. The NBA was awful from 1999 through about 2003.
