Tribute bands are the absolute worst. Playing a bunch of songs you didn't write is one thing, but when you start dressing up and pretend to be somebody else, then I lose all respect for the musician.

The only thing good about them was when they were on Inside The NFL when Costas lost on his pics.

I thought a fat bastard eating chicken in bed pic would be appropriate here, but the intranets is outsmarting me.

whatever you want to call Tributosaurus is fine with me. I still have yet to see them. Late night on a Wednesday though...I couldn't imagine being very good at my job the next day.

put it this way...you will not get a gig playing covers at the Double Door or Metro unless you happen to be Local H and it's a Halloween Show. and if you are a local band in Chicago, those are the two places that EVERYONE wants to play.

otherwise, forget about it. When we started a band, we were in the City. We wrote 9 songs, recorded them, mixed them in a studio, had 1000 c.d.'s made, spent $4k doing all this...from January of 1997 until May of 1997 at 22 years old. got the discs in August.
and THEN we played our first show for our friends in our loft.
The next show was at Phyllis', then next at Morseland, and our 4th show we had an opening slot on a Friday at the Double Door.

could we make $500 a guy playing covers for 3 hours at Nellies or Penny Road Pub? maybe, I don't know what those guys get paid, but yeah. why not?
but...the $250 playing the double door this past January (that went right into the band bank account and funded the new t-shirts) was much more rewarding to me.

I know this chick named Dea DeMarco, aka "One Sweet Jane."
She plays solo acoustic covers upwards of 3 times a week.
It is all she does and she makes a living doing it.

the suburbs and the city is just different music-wise...
for fucks sake, Austin's is the "coolest" place up here. This is why I think they had it right at 115 Bourbon Street...ya know, the fucking hockey game isn't on while your playing your set. :)

I get mad when I see cover bands with musicians that are butchering a Bon Jovi song they should know.
This is why I'll never go see a Pantera cover band or anything like that.

I was at Bourbon Street after a Sox game one Saturday a few years back and I saw a big sign advertising Tiffany that night. I figured Tiffany was a hair metal band from Joliet or something. But it was really Tiffany- "I Think We're Alone Now". I laughed my ass off.

A bunch of guys I played with worked at Metro. This was a long time ago not long after Shanahan bought the place. They had a band that opened all the big hardcore shows at the time. Too much shit jumped off and Joe put a moratorium on hardcore at Metro. That was fine. I prefer(red) basement shows better anyway. The last of my crew to work there was our drummer. L.A. Guns was playing and he was loading in their gear. He refused to load them in because they were wearing makeup and he walked off the job.

If you can't play cover songs for at least 150 minutes then you basically can't make any money playing music in this city. If you want to see if you can write that one hit song, be my guest but I don't think any the 4 chord numbers I have penned are ever good enough to get on anything more than college radio. And thats fine. But they're my songs, so they mean a lot to me and I know why I wrote 'em. I also know that I can't make a living off of them either.

With Pi Theory, we re-worked some stuff anyway because it was just 2 acoustic guitars. So that was pretty neat. With Beneath 51, we've covered some songs that you don't hear covered. None of you have ever been in a bar and heard Willie Nile being covered before you went to Gallery Cabaret a few weeks back.

You would not be disappointed, Doug, I will tell you again that subject group, 101 Proof, is very precise.

Myth Confirmed. 101 Proof won over my buddy Mikey and he's as big of a snob as it gets when it comes to Pantera.

yeah, Hatchet...that shit would have my dying in laughter.

there is huge difference between being a _________ player and being a musician. personally, i'm early in the musicians quest.
my hope is that when I turn 40, I'll be pretty good at this piece of wood and metal.

as thom yorke sang "anyone can play guitar!"

really, to be honest...the 80s cover bands like Sixteen Candles, Wedding Banned, Modern Day Romeo....those are the bands that drive me fucking crazy. I hate it. hate it. hate it...
but, the womens like hearing Jessie's Girl for the 787th time...and chicks buy $8 drinks. it just is...

You'll understand what I mean when you stop seeing bands like American English.

replace "sheet music" with "guitar tablature" and I would agree with you ninefold.

I have no idea what you are talking about, Douchebag.
I have been playing guitar, drums, and piano for 25+ years.
What, pray tell, makes a a person a "talented musician" in your world?

well...
it's not the same thing. you can't read sheet music if you don't know what it means.
anyone can learn to connect a number with a fret.

I'll rate the musician pecking order:
Being in a band and writing your own music.

OVER

Being in a cover band.

I didn't think it was very hard to understand. You might be able play "Cowboys From Hell" note for note, but it doesn't make you as talented as Dimebag.
