For all of the questions and doubts that I have about the White Sox, they are beating teams they should beat (referring to Pittsburgh and Washington), and now have won a series against an Atlanta team that has some very good starting pitching. A month or so ago, I'm not sure I would have been very confident that they would play much better than about .500 type ball, after all, they had struggled so much with the Indians this season. So, although I'm still a doubter, they have clearly put themselves back into contention, and have a chance to make the season fun which I didnt beleive was possible earlier this month.

I'll settle for a 2-2 split now in the next four games, which will make for a 4-2 homestand.

The Cubs/Sox series are always tough games no matter how good or bad the teams are, which is why historically these series are almost always split. I think, iirc, the Sox have a 3 or 4 game advantage in the overall series but thats because they took 2 of 3 from both series last year, and won 2 of 3 during the first series this year.

The Pirates are bad, but they swept them. The Nats are bad, but Strasburg didn't beat them and they gave up a grand total of 4 runs over the 3 game series. That is getting it done regardless of if the team you are playing is in 1st place or last place.

Going into Monday, the Braves had one of the best records in the NL and the Sox lit up thier best pitcher.

They are also winning with good situational hitting and scoring runs after 2 outs. Good pitching and 2 out runs are the biggest things that good teams do well.

This really started in early June against the Indians. Buerhle goes out there and gives up 6 runs on like 13 hits in 3 innings. The Sox ended up coming back to win that game, then took 2 of 3 against the Tigers, and they've been rolling since. I'm not convinced that they are a playoff team yet, but if they get to say 4 or 5 games over .500 by the All Star break and are still hanging around the Twins, it could be thier division to lose.

I am trying to temper my enthusiasm, but I do not fear the Tigers at this point. The Twins still are the hunted and I think the Sox could keep within striking distance of them the remainder of the season.

The hitting is what I am most excited about and not relying on the HR is huge.

Hopefully they don't come back down to Earth and lose 2 of 3 to the Cubs, which could very well happen given the weirdness of baseball.

The lineup is in for today's finale vs. the Braves at "The Cell". You will notice three regulars NOT in today's lineup vs. Derek Lowe at 1:05p:

1 Juan "0 for 4 Last Night" Pierre LF
10 Alexei "Bat Me 2nd, Ozzie!" Ramirez SS
7 Mark "Dayan's Not Playing First Anytime Soon" Kotsay 1B
14 Paul "Maybe I Should Be the Full-Time DH" Konerko DH
20 Carlos "The Home Run Is Back!" Quentin RF
12 A.J. "10 & 5, 5 & 10, What Difference Does it Make?" Pierzynski C
25 Andruw "Remember Me?" Jones CF
24 Dayan "Omar Needs a Breather" Viciedo 3B
18 Brent "Gordon Needs a Breather, Too" Lillibridge 2B

Gavin Floyd does the chucking in the finale of three vs. Atlanta.

Ozzie has been pushing all the right buttons lately so I'm fine with whoever he chooses to run out there. though I don't like Kotsay hitting 3rd.

A couple of things to consider. Gordon Beckham's got yet another slump right now, 3 for his last 29 at-bats. However, Sun-Times/SCORE Insider Joe Cowley told the Ranger last night during the 1 hour, 49 minute rain delay that because of a lack of depth in the White Sox farm system, the Sox aren't about to send Beckham down to the minors. The Sox have very little choice but to bite the bullet. As for Omar Vizquel, he's not getting any younger, and this 43 year-old needs a breather himself after playing practically every single day since Mark Teahen broke his index finger.

Frank, CQ's the only White Sox to hit the long ball the last 2 days after they've been winning the way Ozzie had intended from the getgo the last week to 10 days.

If anyone's wondering about Jayson Nix, he's now a Cleveland Indian. As for Brent Lillibridge, he's doing as well as Gordon Beckham at the plate...Not good.

I wouldn't be opposed to giving Beckham a few more days off, and just letting him work on the side and in the video room. He looks awful at the plate.

BD, that's not about to happen. Gordon's hit the ball hard, but right at guys like Atlanta's Jason Heyward & Melky Cabrera for tough outs. He's snakebit at the plate. He should be back in the lineup tomorrow when the Cubs pay "The Cell" a visit. With the Sox headed for places like Kansas City & Texas next week, likely both hot & humid, I predict Beckham's going to get his average above .200. His defense has been very good at second. As you've seen with Lillibridge today and previously with Jayson Nix & Omar Vizquel before Mark Teahen broke his finger, Gordon's replacements at second haven't been productive either. Besides, SCORE/Sun-Times Insider Joe Cowley mentioned last night during the rain delay and on "The Danny Mac Show" today that there's nothing in the minors to replace Beckham. If there's one thing I'd like to see, and this may be meatballish on my part, Beckham should get his head shaved if it means changing his bad luck.

It hasn't happened to this point so I don't expect it to happen. I disagree about how hard he's hitting the ball. Sometimes, yes. Most of the time, no.

He's got talent, his mechanics are probably not good right now, but I'm still hopeful that he'll eventually contribute this season.

Gavin really deserved a win today - he's been lights out for the last 3 starts and has had nothing to show for it.

2.5 back - whodathunkit??

Not me, they have picked up 7 games in the standings over the last 2 weeks or so.

That was painful watching Kotsay walk up there as the third hitter in the 9th with Pierre on second. Paulie picked him up.

The Sox have been playing out of their frickin minds and it is great!

I'll never understand baseball because I thought the Sox were dead months ago.

Even though Vizquel is old, he makes the Sox defense so much more stable.

Anyone know why Rios wasn't in the linup today ? Just a day off? It would be his 2nd day off in the last week so I'd find that a bit odd.

SWEEP! Nine in a row! Another GREAT outing by Gavin and another save by Big Bobby (16-17). Paulie has been clutch all year. Keep it rolling this weekend, Boys!

The Brewers sweep the '27 New York Twins (8-12 this month)! 2.5 games back!

He is 0-10 with 6K's career vs. Derek Lowe.
