You know, I never realized he won the MVP and played on not just one but two championship teams while with the Reds. I wish he would talk about that stuff more often, it really goes unnoticed

Dave Concepcion should be in the Hall of Fame.

And I'm sure he'll have nothing but nice things to say about Ryne Sandberg as Cubs manager.

Joe is debating the guys on if Strausburg should be an All-Star. Joe said he hasn't earned it. The other 2 are basically saying the fans want to see him, so he should be in it. Personally, I think he should be in it. I want to see him face the big guys from the A.L

I only saw the very end of Concepcion's career. Was he a great fielder and baserunner? Better than Ozzie Smith or Omar Vizquel in their respective primes? I ask because his .679 career OPS ain't too good.

Everyone is better after they retire...

Davie was vastly overrated, IMO. He was on some great teams, though.

I saw this thread in the "View new posts" list and out of the corner of my eye beneath 'Joe Moran' I saw "RIP", not "MLB" .... you can imagine my disappointment.

Completely agree. Concepcion does not deserve to be anywhere near the HOF.

Look at the year Joe Morgan had in '76:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CIN/1976.shtml

And Johnny Bench had three (inexplicable?) off-years during his prime: 1971, 1973 and 1976.

For the record, I was channeling JM... I also believe Concepcion should be in the Hall of Fame the same way I should. Go to the front gate and buy a ticket.

I agree with Reason. I don't care of the fans want to see him or not, 4-6 starts does not make you an All Star.

Thats true. But the 6 starts Strasburg will have by the time the All Star rosters are announced isn't enough to make him an All Star. There are a lot of pitchers ahead of him. Carlos Silva has meant more to his team than Strasburg has at this point.

Strasburg will likely be there next year, the year after that, and the year after that....

Yeah, you're right. But is Washington sending the best representative of the team in Strasburg?
I know that most players in the ASG are the preceived best rather than the actual best contributors.
That being said, Strasburg might just be the best pitcher in the ASG. Maybe that alone should bring him there, regardless of his tenure.

That being the case, there must be some high quality starting pitchers that pitched long careers and had poor W/L records due to circumstances beyond their control. Who are they?

Bert Blyleven is one that comes to mind.

The Stephen Strasburg debate was a topic of conversation not just with ESPN's "Sunday Night Baseball" team, but FOX Sports' lead MLB analyst Tim McCarver says that the Washington Nationals' pitcher should be going to Anaheim next month. Mark Grace seemed to agree with that during a back & forth with Kenny Albert during FOX's coverage of Cubs/White Sox Saturday night.

That being said, Strasburg may be off to a great start since his call-up, but he's not done enough to earn a trip to Anaheim's Angel Stadium for next month's All-Star Game. If Strasburg continues to dominate hitters next year, then he should be in Phoenix for the All-Star Game at Chase Field. I think it's absurd that people are talking about Strasburg and the "Midsummer Classic" considering the fact he's only been on the big club since early June.

Who really cares who is in the All-Star game anyway? If you'd rather see Adam Dunn sit on the bench the whole game or come off the bench and strike out or old man Livan pitch an inning instead of seeing Strasburg you're baseball retarded.

If fans were able to vote for pitchers there is little doubt Strasburg would be the leading vote getter. Despite Pud's efforts the all-star game is an exibition game for the fans and the fans want to see Strasburg pitch. In my humble opinion Strasburg should definitely be on the all star team.

If he does get elected to the team how about the pitching the NL will run out there. Doc, Jimenez, Lincecum, Strasburg, Josh Johnson, Wainwright, Gallardo. Yikes! This could be the first time the NL wins the all star game in their last 13 tries.

Well, I wouldn't exactly call 287 wins and a .534 percentage "poor". But what were Blyleven's horrific circumstances that caused him to have less of a record than you apparently believe he should due to his peripheral numbers? He played for good teams and bad teams. He pitched on two World Series winners.

I'd compare Blyleven to Nolan Ryan in that they're both guys who featured a pitch that was possibly the best of its kind in the game's history. Ryan's obviously was his fastball and Blyleven's was his curve. Those ++++++ pitches allowed them to "dominate" individual hitters and amass strikeouts, but their overall results were less than great and that wasn't because they played on bad teams all the time.

Fuck Morgan and the players.

The All Star game is not designed around "Recogintion for the players"

Its about the fans. Like I care if you get your fuckin bonus?

I wanna see Stasburg in the game.

He played before free agency. Many of the teams he played on were poor.
He was hurt in the 20s and missed a couple of prime seasons.

Blyleven played less than half his career prior to free agency, although I'm uncertain why that means anything. He missed most of 1982. Over half the teams he pitched on were .500 or better. I believe the overall records of all his teams are just below .500. He's at .534. I'm not saying he wasn't a good pitcher. But he's a borderline Hall of Famer. He was also 10-17 for a 91 win team one year. His career W/L record isn't deceiving. It shows you exactly who he was.

This discussion has been had many times in this section. If they are going to start letting in the Curt Schillings of the world and not Bert, thats a travesty. Anybody that has 280+ wins, an ERA of 3.3something, 200+ complete games, and 60 shutouts is without question a HOF pitcher.

Do you think John Picus Quinn is without question a Hall of Fame pitcher?
