I'll actually make a bet with you. Someone, maybe W_Z, should post a list of a dozen or so critically acclaimed and/or popular movies, and we'll see which of us has seen fewer on that list.

A dozen is fine. In no particular order...just off the top of my head:

1. Citizen Kane (naturally...)

2. Casablanca

3. On the Waterfront

4. Dances With Wolves

5. 2001: A Space Odyssey

6. No Country For Old Men

7. Barfly

8. The Sixth Sense

9. Crash (2004)

10. Roger & Me

11. American Beauty

12. Wizard of Oz

I decided to mix it up a little bit with modern and older films. And use some that may seem more obscure. but ya never know...may the best man win.

I have seen 4 of those movies in my life:

4,6,9,12

edit: in addition, I've never heard of #7, and I'm having a hard time placing "American Beauty".

For a small tangent here, is there any movie that has been rendered basically meaningless as Roger & Me has been? Pretty much the whole movie was about the evil car companies being rich and living the good life while they close plants. In hindsight, they didn't do enough of the supposed "evil" things they were doing in order to save the whole city from destruction.

I've seen 10 of 12 missing out on Barfly and On The Waterfront.

I've seen: 2, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12. Several of the others have been in the netflix queue for a while; just haven't gotten to them yet.

Am I the only person in the world who thinks Casablanca is a better movie than Citizen Kane?

Good list W_Z! No Phantom Menace?

W_Z wrote:
1. Citizen Kane (naturally...) - Surprisingly for me, yes!

2. Casablanca - Nope. Pretty sad to have not seen a true classic such as Casablanca, but yet to have seen The Black Hole and Superman III.

3. On the Waterfront - Nope.

4. Dances With Wolves - Negative.

5. 2001: A Space Odyssey - Seen parts on TV many times, but basically a no. Too bad because I think it pioneered a lot of ideas that Star Wars gets credit for; would be interesting to watch.

6. No Country For Old Men - Nope. Would probably like it though.

7. Barfly - No.

8. The Sixth Sense - Affirmative! This movie will forever be associated with its twist, but I think it's a great film even aside from that.

9. Crash (2004) - No.

10. Roger & Me - No, maybe it's good but I'm not a big Michael Moore guy. Michael Moore himself is a big guy, though.

11. American Beauty - Negative.

12. Wizard of Oz - Many times! Even though it is recognized as a classic, this is still an under-rated film. Especially for its time.

imessedup, I think I've got you beat in the race for indifference towards popular culture! You've seen four, I've seen three? Hooray! :P

you funny bastard

seriously, watch "casablanca". it really is a good movie. i'll give that "citizen kane" has lost a lot in age, and is in some way pretentious. but "casablanca" truly is a great film. it's fun, too.

oh and see "superman *II*" and yeah.."black hole" is cool.

All but 2001 and Barfly.
Give me a good reason to see Barfly, please.

"barfly" is about charles bukowski, who was kind of like hunter s. thompson and/or jack kerouac.

most of the movie is him getting drunk and getting into barfights. it's a good time.

I've seen all but 4, 7, 8 & 10. I've heard Barfly is very good and will put it in my queue.

I really didn't like Crash. I thought it was forced, overwrought, and tried too hard to pull on your heartstrings in a transparent, Lifetime TV movie sort of way.

I haven't seen On the Waterfront is several years. I should add that to my queue, too. Or maybe I should just buy it at this point. There are several books I want to order so I might as well throw in a few movies, too.

i thought the exact same thing about certain elements...but not in all. there were some extremely badly written scenes that are too "Get Up Out Of Your Seat In Anger"; i do think, though, that sandra bullock was fantastic in it.

haggis' script was overwhelmingly overrated and shouldn't have won for best screenplay. but some of it was fresh.

I agree with you Zach, there are some real bad parts to this movie but overall it is a good watch. Mrs Bullock shows she is more than a fluff actor.
What shocks me is that so many of you have not seen Kane or Casablanca, you are doing yourself a disservice by not watching both of these true masterpieces. Another movie everyone should watch is Yankee Doodle Dandy staring James Cagney. Good story, Good acting and great song and dance numbers. Cagney was Oscar nominated for the choreography in this.

it was kind of a bad oscars that year, too. the fact that "hustle & flow" wasn't nominated for best picture was a travesty. i'm not sure any of the best picture movies *deserved* best picture but i suppose "crash" was considered the most "important" out of all of them. "the constant gardener" was another snub that deserved more recognition.

No, I completely agree.

I have seen all on the list except for Barfly.

And Spanky, American Beauty was the Kevin Spacey midlife crisis movie, won for best picture back in 99 I think. And it may be my favorite movie on the list.

would definitely recommend a viewing of "casablanca" and "american beauty"; they're two of the more "rewatchable" movies on that list. and very very quotable.
