I know it is a beaten topic and I am not even posting this to make fun of it, but is the lack of a sellout for that game an indication of just the smaller fan base or the lack of belief that this team can win?

I would even say that a Monday night game in Wrigleyville wouldn't be as popular as a Wed night game, but still just asking the question and I only gave the Cubs as an example, because I do think the Monday night game is not a popular option for people.

If it was a Monday night, they would have sold the place out on half priced tickets and arrested 100 attendees for fighting.

As it is, that is a pathetic amount. I may believe the Twins have a better team, but I also believe the Sox can compete with them and this is a big series.

I will be there behind the Twins on deck circle on Thursday.

sox fans are poverty stricken and can't afford the ticket prices (which are crazy high).

1) The economy is still tough, and at least according to popular belief the average Sox fan has less disposable income than the Cubs.
2) The fan base is smaller.
3) US Cellular Field is not a landmark that attracts tourists. Out here, when I mention Chicago, one of the questions that I get asked is "Have you ever been to Wrigley Field?" In fairness, I ask the same thing about Fenway Park. No one says "Have you ever been to US Cellular Field?".

I wonder how many people ask "have you ever been to Target Field" when talking to someone from Minneapolis. Yet, it will still sell more than 30,000 when the Sox get there.

If this was a battle between the Twins and KC, with both teams being tied for first and playing in KC, I'm betting more than 30,000 show up. That is a much smaller market than Chicago/2. The same would go for any other city this side of Oakland and Atlanta.

The weather was fine, there was no other major events drawing people away - it's just a fact that Sox fans do not support their team by buying tickets as much as they should. This is not only my/BigFan's opinion, but the opinion of the Sox front office as well.

Over 41,000 in San Fran to see the 2nd place Giants play the 46th place Cubs, in worse weather, in a smaller market that also supports two teams.

A better, but still different analogy would be if you found out someone was from Milwaukee and someone asked if you've ever been to Lambeau Field. Target Field is a new stadium, which would lead to people wanting to go, and it doesn't have a much more historical stadium by it.

I was walking through Target here in New York and they were selling replica paintings of Wrigley Field. I know it's inconvienient in this discussion but Wrigley Field is associated with Chicago like the Empire State building, Brooklyn Bridge, and the Statue of Liberty are here. The guy on the plane next to me the last time I was flying back said that he took the El to Wrigley Field even though there wasn't a game just to check it out. I'm a Sox fan, and I wouldn't make a special trip to US Cellular Field to simply see it(even though I enjoy games there).

Most of my friends still live in Illinois, and when I talk to them, they never ask "Have you been to Citi Field?". I have been asked "Have you been to Yankee Stadium?" multiple times.

Are you talking about the quote by Kenny Williams where he something like he wouldn't be able to make any big moves if more tickets weren't sold, and he then went out and made two huge moves in getting Rios and Peavy? His actions contradicted that statement.

Right, but fast forward to 2091 and imagine U.S. Cellular is the only park built prior to 2072 where they still play games. People would probably make the special trip in that instance.

I don't recall old Comiskey selling out much in '89 or '90 (sans the last week of '90)

And I don't recall Wrigley Field selling out prior to 1984. It was exactly the same ballpark then as it is now. No one called it a shrine.

When almost every team had an old park, Wrigley and Fenway were considered the two shittiest ones. Ironically, they're the only two that have survived.

Reinsdorf should put a roof on the Cell and use it for an NHL franchise in the off-season.

Im sure if white suburbia//corn country wasnt so frightened of the South Side there would be a 3/4,000 attendance increase at the Cell.

Not saying, Im just saying.

I have a couple of buddies who were at the Sox game last night. They said at the most there might have been 25,000 people at the game.
Whats worse, Cubs fans selling out Wrigley Field when the team is mediocre, or White Sox fans not selling out US Cell when the Sox are in first place?

Im a Cubs fan, but it's not a foreign statement west of rt. 47, or south of Will County.

I've never understood how selling out every game is a good thing for fans besides the perceived lack of payroll that comes with it. It's pretty clear the White Sox spend enough money to compete so that's not an issue.

Like let's say I really wanted the newest Ipod. Would it be better for me if all of them were unavailable and I had to buy them on ebay or if I could walk into a store and get one if I wanted it? On a pure economics basis, the situation with the Cubs is actually worse for the fans than the situation for the White Sox.

This is probably the biggest reason. Although on paper the two teams look similar, the Twins are just better than the Sox period. They have the Sox number and will so for years to come. I even believe the Sox don't think they can beat the Twins either.

You can blame south side Sox fans for white flight to the suburbs.
However, if Reinsdorf would have built a retro stadium in the suburbs, the Sox would be drawing more that the Cubs. Hell, I'm a Cubs fan who would attend Sox games then. I dread the commute to either Wrigley or the Cell so I usually choose to not go to either.
