Ozzie complained about the lack of support and empty seats at the Cell last night. Just heard it on the Score's update.

Arizona (last place) at Milwaukee (3rd place and extremely small market): 35,000+
LA (3rd place) at Philly (2nd place, slightly smaller market): 44,000+
LA (3rd place) at KC (4th place and extremely small market): 40,000+ (Monday)
Atlanta (1st place) at Houston (4th place, smaller market):34,000+
St. Louis (2nd place) at Cincinnati (1st place, extremely small market): 36,000+

The White Sox fans show a disproportionately small amount of support for their (at the time) 1st place team, despite a number factors actually working in their favor (good team, market size, weather, etc.).

Why? Why does it matter to a fan how many people buy tickets to a game? I could give a shit how many people are there. I want them to beat the Twins. Thats all I really care about right now. Getting sucked into these "Our fans are better than your fans" disscusions are pointless and lame...

Or a lot of the fans just can't make the daunting trip from remote corners of South Dakota. You don't really think attendance is the way to judge fans, do you? :D

Are you asking us or Ozzie? Because both seem to have some concerns about the lack of attendance.

Not once have I ever said anybody else's fans are "better", I've just listed a bunch of reasons why the attendance at the Cell should be better for this series.

Which is not a good thing when you are playing your biggest rival, who happens to be tied for the division lead with the Sox in August.

While I am not doubting that Sox attendance should be better, citing a Royals game where the team was selling $5 tickets isn't relevant to yesterday's discussion. The Sox get a sellout or close to it on Monday's when they offer discount tickets too.

I do think it can have a minor psychological effect on a team if the team feels they are putting out a good product, or they could use the loud crowd during a losing streak throughout the season. It depends on the mental fortitude of the team. Who knows if the organization is making a big deal about to the team either? None of us.

It's not embarrasing. The Sox fill the park on Monday also with cheap tickets too. The Royals basically give them away on Mondays. You better sell out when you give away 5 dollar tickets.

Once again, you are having a discussion with yourself, apparently. Not one post in this entire thread lists Ozzie as being apart of the front office. Until yours.......at which point you laughed at.....yourself?

All points are relevant to this thread, that's why they are in here. You can choose to discount any that you choose, but that does make them any less relevant. BUT - comparing the attendance at a Royals game seems to be at least slightly more relevant to this thread than a story about you wanting to buy an ipod and whether they are available or not. Maybe that's just me though.

Oh, the game wasn't at Kansas City? That makes more sense(even though the $5 ticket deal is still true).

The last Royals home game got 14,662 fans on a Sunday. The last Tuesday game they played got 16,749 fans.

You really don't want to compare Royals and Sox attendance because the Sox have been getting roughly 10,000 more a game once they got back into contention with much less discounted tickets and promotions.

So go ahead and compare Royals attendance but please try and count actual Royals home games this time for the argument.

My bad, I misread the Sun-Times. Let me adjust:

KC (4th place) at LA (3rd place, large market split w/ 2 teams): 40,000+

Yes. That totally ruins what we're saying here.

This sort of ties into my argument about the opularity of baseball and football. I don't think there are "good" fans or "bad" fans. Anyone can be whatever kind of fan he or she wants to be. But if you say you're a fan and never go to any games, you can't really be as much of a fan as a guy who does. What if you say you're a fan but you never go to any games and you never watch on TV either? You just kind of like the idea of the team or the sport. Are you really a fan at all? I don't think it's really anyone's place to judge, but in the context of an argument about the popularity of one sport relative to another, questions like that are germane to the discussion.

I think that we can all agree that the Royals suck and that the White Sox attendance thing is perplexing and probably will never be figured out. It is what it is.

Wow. That is weak leg to stand on. "We outdraw the Royals by 10,000".

I would disagree on the "less promotions" thing too. 1/2 price/discounted tickets every Monday, bobbleheads, other giveaways, Elvis night, mullet night, Dog night, fireworks every saturday, teacher discounts, 1/2 way to St. Patty's, Blackhawks night, ethnic/heritage nights, etc.

That's just off the top of my head. I'd say the promotions department may need an overhaul.

I'm a huge Bears fan and a big Cubs fan and a pretty big Hawks fan.
I can't afford to go to these games. I don't WANT to go to Cubs games because of the incredible headache that goes along with getting to Wrigley from McHenry.
Last game I went to was a Sox game in June and I had a blast. Tickets were cheap and the game was fun, and they had fireworks and we got shitfaced in the parking lot while cooking burgers. Last game I went to before that was also at the Cell.
I am not a Sox fan though, but, by your posts, I'm a better Sox fan than I am cubs Hawks or Bears.

Me? Again, I'm not trying to prove who fans are "better", I'm just pointing out that Sox fans do not support their team (attendance-wise) as much as they should - judging by all of the other factors/teams listed here.

I agree, getting to the Cell is generally easier than Wrigley for suburbanites. So........which side of the discussion does that go on?
