You brought up the Royals, not me. I'd prefer to use the Tampa Bay Rays as an example, who have yet to hit 30,000 this year at home besides the Yankees series, opening day, a game against the White Sox, and a game against the Royals. Oh yeah, they are right there too for the division.

However, if your point is that the Angels, Cardinals, and Phillies fans support the team better than the Sox I'm not arguing. The Sox fan base is probably middle of the pack in terms of team support.

I would disagree on the "less promotions" thing too. 1/2 price/discounted tickets every Monday, bobbleheads, other giveaways, Elvis night, mullet night, Dog night, fireworks every saturday, teacher discounts, 1/2 way to St. Patty's, Blackhawks night, ethnic/heritage nights, etc.
http://kansascity.royals.mlb.com/kc/schedule/season_promotions.jsp#royalnites I believe they also now allow people to bring in outside food and non-alcoholic drinks. They may have discontinued that though.

I eagerly await your post where you complain that I respond too much and say that you are done!

Me? Again, I'm not trying to prove who fans are "better", I'm just pointing out that Sox fans do not support their team (attendance-wise) as much as they should - judging by all of the other factors/teams listed here.

I agree, getting to the Cell is generally easier than Wrigley for suburbanites. So........which side of the discussion does that go on?

NO not you damnit. I was talking to JORR.

Yeah, I get your point. I'm not trying to say you're necessarily a big Sox fan because circumstances lead you to attend a bunch of their games. Or that you (or anyone else) are not a fan of a particular team because, for whatever reason, you don't attend many games. RPB articulated it a little better when he compared the hypothetical guy who spends 95% of his disposable income on tickets to Aunt Jinny who makes the brownies for the Sunday football parties and spends most of the afternoon in the kitchen. I just don't see how those two people can be counted equally in judging a sport's popularity.

I may be wrong, but I was under the assumption that all/most stadiums allow fans to bring in food and drinks (NA). They may not advertise it - I know Wrigley does. The couple in front of us bring subs, chinese, a whole family-sized pizza ( ), etc. to every game.

I didn't start the thread, but I heard B&B & Holmes complaining about the lack of tickets sold yesterday during their shows, then saw this thread, then heard Ozzie's comments. Maybe it should posed in the form of the question:

Why are there not more tickets sold for this particular series?

-weather is good
-two (essentially) 1st-place teams later in the season
-your main division rival
-stadium is easily accessible
-plenty of parking
-huge market/great exposure in media
-recent history of success
-recently remodeled and upgraded facilities
-a behind-the-scenes series on MLB that no other team has had (ok, maybe a stretch, but still)
-other teams draw as much/more in similar circumstances

I can't come up with an answer other than Sox fans just simply won't support their team in the form of buying tickets. The actual reason for this? No idea.....

Because a main tenet of being a Sox fan is bashing Cubs and you don't do that by buying tickets. :P

The difference is that the KC Royals blow & are a small market team. The White Sox are in first place in a major market.

I was there last night and there was a lot of Twins fans in attendance.

it's nice to be able to walk up 10 min before game time and get a good seat.

You are right. It may have been allowing actual coolers, but that isn't allowed now so I take it back.

I honestly didn't know you could bring food into the stadium officially.

What is your point? The Sox outdraw the Royals with less promotional tricks. As I said, that's not an accomplishment but it's also not fair to characterize them in the same light.

Also, Kansas City has only 2 pro teams. Chicago has 5 including a cornerstone franchise that plays the same sport and takes probably 70% of the market. Chicago is a big market but it also has a lot more competition. It seems as if the White Sox don't compete as well as many of the other sports for the disposable income of the city.

I heard that the Twins travel well, much like the hated Cardinals whenever they play the Cubs at Wrigley. That being said, it sounded to me as if there were more Twins fans than White Sox fans at the Cell last night among the announced crowd of 30,900 (Tickets Sold).

By your statement, some guy with dispensary cash and time that simply shows up at a game is more of a fan than I am because I do not go. The possibility that he's going there to drink and the game is ancillary to him isn't even taken into consideration. Bad argument is bad.

You read my post, didn't you? I think I said pretty explicitly there is no particular standard for fans. Everyone is different. I believe I even said it's nobody's place to judge. But in the context of a discussion of the popularity of a particular sport(s), I think what we mean by "fan" is a fair question. If a guy who thinks Maria Sharapova is hot claims to be a fan of women's tennis but he has no idea about the scoring and has never even watched an entire match, does the mere fact that he claims to be a "fan" actually make him one? I don't know the answer to that.

It seems as if people are trying to judge what kind of fans the Sox have that they didn't all show up last night. Maybe 200,000 wanted to go be they didn't have dispensary cash. I doubt that's the case. At this juncture in American life, people really don't do without. They find a way to get what's important to them. That's why you see guys that knock down $40,000 a year driving $50,000 cars. I think if someone is really a fan they're probably going to find a way to go to a game.

Take two guys. They both have the same income and same basic family circumstances. They have choices to make. I don't think there's a problem with saying that the guy who devotes more time and money to a particular pursuit (and it doesn't have to be sports) is probably a bigger fan of said pursuit.

It's all a matter of opinion anyway you slice it.

I went to the game last night not because I am a fan of the Sox but a fan of baseball.

Still sad I didn't get to meet JORR because I am a fan of his.

I was in 101, Row 23. I usually stand on the concourse in leftfield but I was with my girlfriend last night and she had to sit.

There were a shitload of Twins fans there, weren't there?

Ya I was walking the concourse in rightfield too didn't get to my seat til 3rd inn

There sure was a shitload of them. Went with my buddies whose college friends were in town from Minnesota, they felt right at home with all the Twins fans. We went to a few bars downtown after and they were everywhere, 2 groups at least at each bar we went to.

The plane and parachuters were pretty cool

Where I come from back in the old country we call people like this morons. These folks have their priorities all wrong. These are the same idiots who are in financial ruins because they just have to give the appearance that they are all that, when really they aren't...like the fools who drive a $1000 car with $5000 rims. They've got the ride or the rims but don't have a pot to piss in & can't support their families.
