Does Manny allow them to win 124% of their remaining 55 games so they'd be able to compete with the Twins?

Joe Mauer had all of the Twins one hits last night so he is very well rested because he didn't have to swing a lot.

That said, I predict the Rangers and Twins play a game later tonight and Ron Washington makes a pitching change at some point.

According to my calculations that would be winning 68.2 games of the remaining 55.

Ramirez has $4.46M left on his contract at the moment, though about $3.34M of that is deferred without interest.

It's not as big of a financial commitment as I thought.

I wouldn't mind seeing ramirez here in time to meet the Yankees and Red Sox. I don't think he will help the inevitable but I like to go down fighting.

The SCORE's Matt "The Dancing Fool" Rodewald, who is doing updates this afternoon with "Boers & Bernstein", says that even though Manny Ramirez's contract expires after this season, the money is spread out and that Manny's owed $15 million for next year. Although FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal tweeted earlier today that the Sox would put in a claim towards Manny, Rosenthal wrote a column in which he wasn't so sure it's worth it either. Keep in mind Manny is 38 years old, has been on the DL 3 times with leg injuries this year and can no longer play the outfield. He can still hit, but would Manny's shtick be tolerated with Ozzie here in Chicago or with the Drew Carey-looking Joe Maddon down in Tampa? I'm not so sure he's worth the aggravation.

The claiming team is only on the hook for a prorated portion of the deferred salary. About $4.46M.

Updated - deal is "close":

Toni Ginetti of the Sun Times wrote:
The White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers may be closing in on a deal to send Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez to the South Side in exchange for minor league prospects.

The deal appeared to be close Wednesday when reports surfaced that Ramirez was claimed by the Sox on waivers. The right-handed slugger must approve any potential deal because he has a no-trade clause in his contract. But Ramirez may have approved a move, having said he wants to return to the American League next season when he becomes a free agent.

The Dodgers appeared to be trying to negotiate a trade instead of allowing Ramirez to be claimed outright without compensation, with the Sox having only to pay his remaining salary.

Sources confirmed the Dodgers were reviewing scouting reports on some of the Sox minor league players in anticipation of a deal.

Kenny Got Edwin Jackson just before the trade deadline and he's done a good job. It seemed like the relief corp. was the least of his concerns back then. He was unable to go get the bat (Dunn) he was looking for and Manny would fit that need (IF he's healthy enough) for the stretch. Unfortunately, the bullpen is in shambles and unless the guys he brings up from the minor leagues contribute more than one might reasonably expect, I'm not sure Manny can make much of a difference. But he probably puts some fans in empty seats and Kenny gets credit for trying....why not?

50% Manny is better than the crap they run out there as a DH now.

You guys really want to send prospects from a stressed farm system to rent this guy for 6 weeks?

Considering I don't trust Kenny's "prospects", why the hell not. This team is going to wind up being the fucking Pirates if someone doesn't stop Kenny's meglomaniacal ways.

I think if the Dodgers dump say 60% or more of that salary, and get an A level prospect in return they would be happy.

There is no way the Sox can trade a couple players from their six minor league teams because all these prospect will play on one major league team.

Ozzie likes to talk about his son being his own person and independant. I wonder what he would do if KW popped him one, which is what he deserves for all his shit talking. Then it would be all about Oney being his son, just like it was when he got fired.

Honestly, KW needs to walk out of his office and down the street to one of the "private clubs" in the neighborhood and ask someone to rough the kid up a little...but like Don Corleone said in dealing with Bonasera's problem, they have to send the right person so the kid doesn't get killed...just someone walking up to him on the street without any incident and hitting him square in the nose.

the Sox strength is actually developing their own players
the trades they make usually are busts

they have been good at developing productive players the last several years...Alexei, Crede, Juan Uribe, even back to Magglio and Carlos Lee...and pitchers Jenks, Floyd, Danks, Buerhle, etc...

AJ, Paulie, etc have been around a while, but the last 5 years, few of the outsiders have been worth it...I still question the Rowand for Thome trade after u won a World Series...other than Thome and Juan Pierre, most have been busts, especially the rent-a-players (griffey, etc.)

Manny would probably help us, but we better not mortgage the farm to do it

Ramirez was reared in Cuba-in the Majors from day 1; Uribe was developed-in Colorado (3 yrd in the bigs before Chicago); Floyd was a 1st round washout with injury problems in Philly, but I will credit the pitching coaches (Coop and Dotson) with helping him get his shit together. Danks was a trade acquisition. Jenks was cut from Anaheim. They drafted Maggs, Lee, Buehrle, and Crede.

whistler wrote:

I would do Rowand for Thome any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Rowand was at his ceiling, Thome was still effective. They gave up absolutely nothing for Griffey (Nick Masset-HA!). I'm still not sure how I feel about Ely for Pierre.
whistler wrote:

The "farm" they would be giving up for Manny is probably not as much as one would think. And at this point, I don't know that I would trust anyone down on the farm.

Stop being baseball stupid
