Link is to video and story about Iowa center Josh Koeppel being hit Monday head on by a car while on his moped.

I'm not sure if it is common everywhere else, but at Iowa, it's very common for athletes to drive mopeds around campus because they can be parked anywhere and the campus is very spread out in regards to where the academic buildings are to where the athletic facilities are. Coach Ferentz was asked if he would stop the team from riding them and he basically he couldn't stop them but he hopes that after this, they start wearing helmets (apparently they are not required below a certain horsepower).

He's very lucky to not have landed on his shoulder/head. He was able to walk away with some bumps and bruises and if pressed, probably could have played this weekend but they held him out (which was the smart thing).

EXTREMELY common at Wisco too. I think we have had 2 or maybe 3 moped incidents in the past few years.

Looking at that video, the way the sun was shining, looked like the old dude driver of the SUV was driving into and looking into the sun, and what the kid on the moped was wearing, a dull gray hoodie (with the hood up?) and beige shorts..might be a good idea to at least wear a brightly colored ball cap or, better, yet, a blazingly bright-colored light jacket or hoodie. Grays and beige are going to blend into the background and old geezers in SUV's aren't going to be able to see your scooter riding ass coming at them.

It's really about being able to see those things darting through traffic.

Looks like old guy in the white truck had spotted the dude on the harley but missed the kid on the scooter and he punched it a bit to beat the harley through the intersection, taking out the kid on the scooter who he clearly never saw until the kid was cart-wheeling through the air.

What you also can't see from that video is that the interscetion where that took place is one where to the east of the accident site (where Koeppel was coming from) is a pretty steep uphill(I'd say 2-3% grade) where you reach the peak of the hill right near the intersection so given the sun position early in the morning, it's more than possible that the other driver actually never saw him until it was too late.

Most of the people I saw on them were wearing helmets tho.

He is. He got some bumps and bruises but nothing more than that. He was in and out of the emergency room that mornign making sure he had no broken bones or a concussion. Conspiracy theory says Kirk did it so he could start James at center (Totally joking!)
