When will Cutler be held accountable for his play? When will the reason the Bears lose be blamed on him? I keep seeing in most of the predictions that many people have already built an excuse for Cutler's poor play. Fact is Cutler lost at least 4 games by himself last season. That would have made the Bears a playoff team. Even winning 3 of those god awful games would have put them in the playoffs. As injured and as supposedly bad the Bears were he cost them the season.
When I dared question the trade, many people told me that the QB is the most important position in all of team sports and that a good QB will make everyone better. When that didn't happen the only player who didn't get blame for it was the QB.

I'm not letting myself criticize him for a few weeks though so I'll abstain from other thoughts.

When the quarterback is the biggest question mark on the team. His desicion making needs to be better no doubt, but he is far down on the list of things that concern me this year.

He will never be the biggest problem on the team. Neither were Orton or Grossman. He is the most important player on the team though.

Grossman was a GIANT problem in the Super Bowl and in 2007.

Put Favre and Rodgers on this team and they both will be frustrated, pick throwing, battered non playoff qb's. Put Jay on the Vikings (preferably with rice) or Packers and he is in the playoffs and the pro bowl. He just has a shitty public personality and it compounds the problem.

At least last year, the offensive line on the Packers was significantly worse. If there was ever a place to actually blame the offensive line it would be Green Bay.

Indeed, and they were able to still do well offensively in spite of that.

Until the GM gets an offensive line that is at least average, I will give Cutler a pass.

Hova, which 4 games do you think he lost by himself? The SF game clearly comes to mind, but I wonder which other 3 you are thinking about.

The thing is, you can't just isolate games that you think he lost, and then presume another QB (Orton or whoever) would have still won the other 7 games. I don't think Orton would have won the Pittsburgh or Seattle games, and he probably wouldn't have put up all the points needed to beat Minnesota near the end of the year either. So you have to count the good with the bad.

Also, where you do and others on the board get the stat where Cutler threw some 20 or 22 red zone picks? 5 of his 26 total picks were in the red zone. Too high to be sure, but far less than 20+ which would be insane.

Here's a breakdown of the picks:

http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago ... -them.html

I think he lost 5.

Both Packers games
49ers
Falcons
Eagles

Of course you can never accurately predict how another player will do but I really believe a QB like Orton would've protected the ball better. The 20 red zone picks were an exaggeration but I was saying in addition to what he has already thrown.

Yeah I'll give you the Eagles game too, he had a pretty bad game despite throwing just one pick. But in the other three, he had some successes along with the errors.

No doubt Orton would have protected the ball better, but he also wouldn't have thrown 27 TD's. Considering that every other aspect of the team performed below-average, I can't imagine Orton or more than half the QB's in the league winning more than 7 games with that team.

I should have figured you were exaggerating with the 20 RZ picks, but I've seen that stat a number of times and I don't think everyone who has used it realizes it's not accurate.

For once I'll have to concede you make a good point regarding Cutler. Although I will say this, we'll never know what the team would have been without him. Unlike Hova, I think they would have been much worse, and therefore Cutler did make them "better". But I concede I expected him to cover up some of the team's deficiencies rather than blend in with them.
