Another option for the Bears: Fire Lovie & replace him with a "bargain basement" guy for like a 2 season contract at 1.5/2 million a year. Tell the new coach he has to keep all assistants. That way the Bears have a new coach for just an extra 4 million to placate the village people with the "fire & pitchforks"!. This would work with a promotion from within the ranks of assistants too. Maybe give the Special teams guy a chance to be head coach. It's worked before!

I PREDICT...that Ron Rivera will be the next Bears head coach.
I hate making predictions that I dont like.

That is why statistical bases for arguments often amuse the hell out of me.

It's just evidence that the official, yard-based NFL statistics are garbage.

No you don't. You love the sound of your own voice as you talk what you type.

However if the Bears don't get Cowher or Shanahan I have no doubt they will go to Chico. I hate when I agree with you.

Sadly, I think Rivera will be the next coach too. If they don't fire Lovie this year, all the top candidates will be gone, and they will be stuck with another coordinator without head coaching experience.

On a lighter note, I loved the caller to Mac's show this week who wanted Ditka as Cutler's QB coach.

I would have had no problem with Lovie being shown the door after the Super Bowl and Rivera being promoted. Now, given the circumstances, I want Cowher. If Rivera would come back as the D-Coordinator, that would be fine...

I still maintain the time he spent campaigning for Head Coaching jobs during the playoff run negatively impacted the defense's readiness for those games.

On the "FOX NFL Sunday" pregame this morning, it had nothing to do with Lovie Smith's future or maybe lack thereof, but NFL Insider Jay Glazer said that "teams can't hire head coaches until after this season, thanks to the Rooney Rule." That being said, it's not stopping Mike Shanahan from supposedly meeting with Washington Redskins' owner Dan Snyder about a job that's surely going to open after their sorry season ends. Shanahan is also said to be eyeing the Dallas Cowboys, even those the Mike Mulligan-looking Wade Phillips may have helped his chances with his team's big road win last night in New Orleans.

"Glaze's" own story about Shanahan came well before Zach Zaidman's revelation on 670 The SCORE's own Bears' pregame that Lovie's future isn't necessarily set in stone according to General Manager Jerry Angelo, contrary to what John "Moon" Mullin wrote Friday on CSNChicago.com.

Any hope here?

BALTIMORE -- Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo on Sunday said the fate of coach Lovie Smith has not yet been decided.

Before the game against the Ravens, Angelo shot down a report from Comcast SportsNet/Chicago on Friday that cited unnamed sources saying Smith would return for the next to last year of his contract in 2010.

A review of Smith will be conducted after the Bears finish the season against Minnesota and Detroit.

Cowher is only good if he is bringing in others to run the organization. The coach running the organization thing will not be good.

It was Lovies stubbornness that cost the Bears the Super Bowl, not Riveras.

Lovie was given a contract extension after the Super Bowl to provide future guaranteed employment for Angelo & Phillips, who also got extensions. Angelo & Lovie are viewed as a package deal so it was in Angelos interest to push for an extension for Lovie, which in turn got him an extension too. Thats fine when times are good. Now however, with the Bears reeling, I gotta believe that Angelo realizes that both he & Lovie will surely be goners after next season...unless, he distances himself from Lovie & replaces him now. If Angelo is able to hire a new coach, he can try to hitch his wagon to the new coach thereby giving himself some future job security while the new guy has a chance to improve the organization, which will certainly take at least a couple of years. If Angelo thinks that he can convince Phillips & McCaskey to fire Lovie, he could give himself additional job security for a few years. Then again, it could backfire & he could also end up out the door.
I found it very interesting that in Angelos interview this morning he did not give Lovie a vote of confidence. I have a feeling something is brewing at Halas hall. Maybe it's just wishing thinking on my part. Sure the Bears owe Lovie $5 Million for each of the next two years. They are wasting $10 Million per year on Tommie Harris. They can easily fund the firing of Lovie by releasing Harris & using the $10 Million they would have paid him next year to pay Lovies salary for the next 2 years. It's a break even proposition.
I need another Kettle One...

This report was a pile of crap.
Angelo pretty much said so himself after the game.
Turner ought to be gone today if not tomorrow. 0 points from offense? And really, who would have seen that 4th down endzone toss to Olsen coming? Pretty much anyone who's watched a football game this season.
And seriously, a between the tackles run on 3rd and goal from the 3? What did they see this year that made that sound like a good choice? The run between the tackles has been a disaster this year.

I thought it was ridiculous to believe that report had any merit to begin with. To say that the last 3 games of the season had no impact on the decision sounded a bit off to me, especially when you have a team playing as badly as it has. After the Baltimore game, and with a Minnesota game looming, Lovie's job could very much be in jeopardy.

Exactly. I said the same thing after Mullins report was released. Just imagine...someone at Halas Hall told a reporter that Lovie will return next year! WTF would you expect a Bears employee to say? The fact that Jerry didn't give Lovie a vote of confidence yesterday morning is very telling.
Again, all the Bears need to do to fund the firing of Lovie Smith is to release Tommie Harris & use his $10 Million annual salary to pay the remaining 2 years on Lovies $11 Million contract.
