...and now it's over.

I held out hope for you, but that was all for not. I didn't join in the bashing. Remained fairly silent through all the negative talk.Kept my Manny thoughts to myself, and today you took off your collective cleat and smacked me in the ear. You were never good, you were just meh. I hope to see you again one day when you decide to stop sucking at baseball.

I'm just glad they stayed sort of competitive until football season.

Even with Elmhurst Steve's 90 win projection, that is a pretty good season. It would win a division fairly often and it was better than I projected. Still, it was not good enough. The Twins were the better team all along.

Unfortunately, the future is bleak. The Tigers are good and young with big money coming off the books in Magglio.

The Twins core is good, young and locked in for the long term. Also the new stadium and playoff boost will result in them having money to spend. I imagine they will be spending it on a top line FA starter to go along with Liriano and expected rebounds from Baker, Slowey and a good bullpen.

The Sox will have a fantastic staff again next year. Still, it is that staff that has failed them at the beginning and end of this year. The offense may have to replace Konerko and AJ with little room for salary increase. I think they will have to sell off a starter and possibly Quentin.

Thanks, dolphin. :(

I thought their startes would be enough to dominate the division this year. "Best starting fibe in the AL" I would tell people...

Well, there is a pretty good chance that Pavano comes back to earth, so we have that going for us.

Yeah. But Justin Morneau will be back as well. I can see Pavano being good again next season. He seems to have figured something out. Not sure what, exactly. I would like to think that Kenny has a plan for next season, but the Manny thing made my faith in him decrease ever so slightly...

I'm pretty sure Pavano only has a good season in his contract year.

We'll probably be saying the same thing about Konerko next summer..

I read yesterday that she went crying from the set of that reality show because Lou Reed wouldn't give her permission to sing his song on national TV, and she didn't have a backup.

You know what you get with Konerko .280 28 85. I cannot believe that he will take a pay cut, when he may be able to get an increase (over his current 12 million) for 3-4 years elsewhere. After all he has done for this team it would be painful to see him go. It would be even more painful to see him stay and have people resent him for his bad contract.

Konerko has to be considered in any MVP discussion. He's has a fantastic year. That said, offering him a multi-year deal would be foolish. Better to make an offer of arbitration and should he take it, great. If he turns it down and signs elsewhere, they get compensatory picks at least. Better to trade/let a guy go a year too early, than a year too late. Viciedo can take over at 1st base and do it a whole lot cheaper. You probably don't get the kind of numbers from Viciedo in 2011 that Konerko produced in 2010. But you probably don't get those numbers from Konerko himself in 2011.

Hopefully 2yr/$24M with an option for a 3rd year will get it done.

After listening to him talk earlier in the year about Dye's situation, I think it will.

Their situations are very different. Dye had an atrocious 2nd half while Pauly got better. I don't think there will be a shortage of teams offering Pauly an everyday job for next season and beyond. Hopefully the Sox make a competetive offer and Pauly wants to stay and try to win another World Series.

I dont think you can offer a 10/5 guy arbitration. That's more for guys who are in the 4th and 5th years in the league.

I think you're wrong about that. I believe it's just up to the player as to whether or not he cares to accept arbitration and therefore only a one year contract for whatever amount the arbitrator rules on.

However, failing to offer arbitration ensures a team will get nothing for a player that winds up signing elsewhere. The danger in offering arbitration to a player you're not sure you want (just to get the draft picks) is that they accept it and then you are probably paying that guy pretty good coin for that season. The Cubs failed to offer Rich Harden arbitration and when he signed with Texas, the Cubs got nothing. It had been thought they would offer arbitration to get the picks, but they were afraid he might accept.

Let me soak this in for a minute. You're wrong.

Here are the arbitration rules:

Quote:
Q: When does a player become eligible for salary arbitration?
A: A player with three or more years of service, but less than six years, may file for salary arbitration. In addition, a player can be classified as a "Super Two" and be eligible for arbitration with less than three years of service. A player with at least two but less than three years of Major League service shall be eligible for salary arbitration if he has accumulated at least 86 days of service during the immediately preceding season and he ranks in the top 17 percent in total service in the class of Players who have at least two but less than three years of Major League service, however accumulated, but with at least 86 days of service accumulated during the immediately preceding season.

http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/info/faq.jsp#arbitration

Suck it.

I just looked it up and you are correct, the player must have less than 6 full years of service time, so that is unfortunately not an option. That leaves the Sox in a tough position. I would have to let him go and give Viciedo the position. As said...better to make the move a year early, than a year too late.

A team can offer arbitration to a free agent regardless of service time.

Pauly has been a type B free agent all season but has recently moved to type A status.

Thats what I thought. I figured that if he had less than 6 years service time and the 2 sides could not agree on a contract, it automatically went to arbitration. But if a player had more and the club offered arbitration, it was up to the player to accept arbitration or turn down the offer. But by offering a contract by the tender deadline and offering the player arbitration, they could ensure compensation (draft picks) should he sign elsewhere.
