I'm really regurgitating old arguments, but why is there still a Coache's Poll? It's not a coaches poll. It's a football operations guy poll. The coaches don't waste their time with it. The voters have their own bias based on conferences. It is impossible to actually watch all the games (60 games in 1 week at 3.5 hours a game 210 hours of football) and get the vote in by Monday.

I'm curious, though. I would expect there would be a coach/institution that refuses to fill it out. And I'm guessing there are weeks when all 117 votes are not tallied. Anyone know?

Only 60 or so participate each year. It is an anachronism, but probably no worse of one than the media polls. They usually end up looking mostly identical anyway.

We could try to rectify it with mechanical numbers like computer rankings, but then people pitch a fit whenever the numbers don't look exactly like their intuitions. So now we have the worst case scenario--dumb media rankings, dumb coach rankings, and computer rankings that have been purposefully designed to mirror the dumb human rankings.
