If I had to chose between Wale and Briggs, I say Briggs.
How much of a cap hit would Wale's release result in? That is all that matters to the front office. The NFL has made cap management almost as important as talent evaluation. If you want to be competitive for an extended period of time, you have to manage both equally well. I hope they can find a way to retain Briggs. But if they can't, I have faith in Angelo to find a replacement. He can find defensive talent, offense not so much yet.

With the salary cap increase from the new CBA, and now Tommie Harris' potential career threatening injury (that COULD cut down on his speed at the very least), why wouldn't the Bears either

A) reconsider their cap strategy, and make it a priority to lock up Briggs

B) Franchise Briggs and then reevaluate after Harris comes back ???

I think option B is the one they should and will take.

Generally speaking, good defensive ends are harder to find. At least for the Bears.

At least, not yet. I think he signed a 6 year deal. No way they keep him for all 6 years. I'd say 4 tops.

I get the feeling that Briggs wants out of Chicago. He probably is tired of being in Urlachers shadow. He is a good solid linebacker who will be over paid by some desperate team. He is good......and a solid player but he has missed some huge tackles this year......and I wonder if he benefits a lot from playing with #54.......... because I'm sure #54 has benefitted from playing with Briggs

An average of the top 5 salaries at his position. They can only franchise him once though.

I agree but I think that has more to do with the depth of the Bears D-Line....they have a lot of good D-Lineman........... LB....... they are not very deep at all....... this also raises Briggs' value.

it doesn't say anything about franchising him only once....
only one player per year...

Should the Bears release or restructure Ogunleye's contract so they could resign Briggs? I've heard a few people ask this question on the radio today so I wanted to get you guys opinion on it. I think they should do it. Ogunleye has been a big disappointment and he won't play hurt. I would mind them giving Anderson a shot if he doesn't want to rework his deal.

I agree. Ogunleye is good, but if it came down to one or the other, I'd much rather lose Ogunleye than Briggs. Briggs is not only one of the Bears best players, but he's at a position with less depth; after seeing Anderson play, I know the Bears are deep at DE.
