Since Irish Boy hates me, he never did a preview for them. Therefore, I have to create this thread.

I'm concerned about Robert Marve. He clearly has talent. I love how he can make plays with his legs. Unless the offensive line plays significantly better he's going to need all the running ability. However, I just have a feeling that he'll make great plays instead of being a great player. They need the QB to be great to have a chance. It's only one game though but he reminds more of past QB's like Brandon Kirsch and Brandon Hance and less like Kyle Orton and Drew Brees. Also, don't take a 15 yard penalty by celebrating a touchdown when we are losing. It's a dumb rule but you need to be smarter.

Injuries to the running backs really hurt. Ralph Bolden needs to get back as quick as possible. The offense is completely different with him in the game. McBurse has battled injuries all throughout training camp and hopefully that is why he looked bad. No offense to Dan Dierking, but things aren't going to go well for us if you are getting the carries. He's developed into a halfway decent running back but we need Bolden or McBurse to do anything this year.

I was pleasantly surprised by the defense. Obviously they could have done better against the running backs but given Notre Dame's quality talent at WR and the inexperience of the secondary they did a pretty good job. Ryan Kerrigan is a stud.

Now they need to win the next 3 against teams they should not only beat but beat by 2 touchdowns. I'll stick with my prediction of an 8-5 season.

Marve is a was a complete D-bag jackass when he was at Miami. The day they cut him loose was a glorious day. I'm sure he is better than he was, but that's not saying much considering just how much of a tool he was.

Rick- What did you think of Purdue using Henry for some running plays, I think they could use Siler for some of those plays also. I do wish Purdue hadn't lost Bolden, he would have helped a lot yesterday, of course I'm not sure about the offensive line.

Defense looked good, except on some of the running plays. The big thing to me is if Michael Floyd doesn't fumble near the endzone, how would that game have turned out yesterday, would it have been real ugly.

Kerrigan is badass. he's a top 15 NFL pick imo.

if purdue wide receivers could catch that outcome may have been slightly different...

I've been a big Henry fan since he came to Purdue. While I'm not saying he's Drew Brees, he reminded me of him. I'd love to see him get some plays and see what happens. Marve is the clear #1 though.
That's the standard operating procedure when Purdue plays at Notre Dame. I have no idea why but it seems like the stage is too big for them.

I think Purdue is fine, they played well against a more talented team, lost a loseable game on their schedule, and a 7-5 type year is still on track. I'd worry about Marve being (ironically) somewhat Cutlerish, both in attitude and in on-field performance.

Danny Hope said that as many as 20 players saw their first ever game action. Add in the fact that two players, Marve and Siller, that Purdue is really counting on this year missed all of last season and hadn't played a real game since 2008 and there is some hope that things will go more smoothly after this. The schedule is now quite favorable for getting all of them time.

And at least get your 15 yards worth. It was an ugly jump that he didn't even start until he was already in the end zone.

I was impressed with Kerrigan as well.

The thing that stuck out to me with Marve was his decision making. He would roll out and throw back over the middle of the field and do things that if he tries to do consistently in the Big 10 he is going to get in trouble.

I agree. That is concerning. At least he was doing that against a seemingly above average defense and it didn't become a major problem.

I came away thinking that Purdue looked pretty good. Routes were a little sloppy and timing was off, but that stuff can be fixed as the season progresses. ND looked like the ND of old. They had decent pressure in the defensive middle and their corners did well. Manti Teo or whatever his name is lived up to the hype, I thought.

Keith Smith out for the year with a torn MCL/ACL. It happened early enough in the year that he may be granted a sixth year of eligibility. I don't know how likely that is. It sucks for him because with a good year he was definitely going somewhere in the NFL draft in my opinion.

At least in the spread offense you can make up a loss like this but it hurts the Rose Bowl hopes.

I find it very interesting how much time they are giving Rob Henry. While Marve was hurt, he probably could have played but it sounds like they were willing to give time to Henry against an opponent we should be beating. There is a rumor that Marve had the flu too. There isn't and won't be a QB controversy because it's Marve or bust this year but they really do seem to like getting Henry involved. I know I've seen plenty of two QB gameplans but most of them involve players of similar ability. This is a case where they have a clear #1 but still give the backup some time. I wonder if that will continue into Big Ten season.

getting that backup QB playing time in non-conference play is pretty important, IMHO. NU got to do it in the 4Q of the Rice game, but all they did was do frickin' hand offs. I get that they are trying to run out the clock, but I kinda feel like he needs to get more confidence throwing the ball.

He's gotten a pretty good amount of time in meaningful drives too though including Notre Dame when we were down but not out of it. It probably also helps keep Marve healthy as he likes to run also and he's battling some injuries already.

So basically, Purdue has lost:
It's starting QB.
It's starting RB.
It's backup RB.
It's best WR.

I think I need to be realistic and know that Purdue does not have the depth to compete when something like that happens. It's the difference between a program like Purdue and a program that has depth. Ohio State and Iowa and Wisconsin can overcome injuries because they have more talent.

Start warming the seat for Danny Hope. This is too much like the last few years of Tiller for my tastes.

Rick, I didn't think their backup QB looked too bad last week. Is he just stinking the place up today? 0 points vs. Toledo in a half is pretty bad.

The problem with the backup QB seems to be that he can't throw. That makes it easy for the defense because they can just load up on the run and even a good mobile QB like Henry can be neutralized.

They started off terribly but when Marve went down while also handing Toledo the ball like 10 yards from the end zone, and basically gave Toledo a 14 point lead I think the team was in shock. I'd like to hope that they would be mentally strong enough to overcome it but obviously not.

Obviously, I want Danny Hope to succeed but this is too much like a continuation of the Tiller era(even though Tiller dominated against MAC teams).

I would. He would be a great fit for the style that Purdue wants to play.

It's a little early to come up with my list of who I would want(and is realistic) but I am sure he would be on it with Kevin Sumlin.
