I like the idea of implementing a wildcat formation for very limited use. However, from the way it was run and the people who were running it, it looked like Martz drew that up in the pregame.

I'd think Hester would be the QB of choice for that formation with Chester Taylor being the RB or Forte starting in the backfield and going in motion.

Hester would fumble the ball, pick it up, then run around in circles...

On 3rd & VERY long, use the Wildcat with Brad Maynard. He is capable of throwing a quick dump pass or punting it.

Why would you have the punter in the game on 3rd down?

Maynard can throw the ball very well & has displayed this talent on fake punts over the years. This would confuse the Defense as they might have to provide a return man.

Why wouldn't this be an obvious fake? There's zero reason to even consider punting on 3rd down.

He was back there in the pre-season and indeed dropped the snap but then just fell on it. I'd like the Wildcat more if I thought they'd audible in it to find the hole/option, but I'm assuming they just run what's called, even if it's doomed from the start.

The Wildcat was always a fad, and now it's an outdated one; even Miami can't reliably execute it anymore. And the benefits of the Wildcat are only worth the opportunity cost if your QB sucks--when's the last time you saw Indy or New England running a pistol? With the way Cutler is playing, I don't know why you'd ever take the ball out of his hands.

What does the pistol have to do with the Wildcat? Actually, I think a New England or Indy in a pistol formation would be very intriguing.

Sorry, just sort of lumping all the gimmick formations together. I meant a non-QB in a pistol set, which the Jets and a couple other teams like to use on option-style plays.

A few years ago I was semi-advocating trying out an artillery set where Hester lines up 30 yards backfield, and a non-QB player would take the snap and throw it back to him.

I think the wildcat could be effective. The problem so far, is that Martz is calling it at weird and wrong times...Cutler is playing well and in a groove, ok let's throw Forte out there. I think it makes more sense to start a drive with it.

No, I'm not.

I just don't understand why bringing the punter in on 3rd down would even be considered. Let's say you have something ridiculous like 3rd & 40. Throwing a pass in this situation would probably be stupid because of the high probability that you throw a pick. But why wouldn't you just run the ball, pick up any yardage you can get, and then just punt on 4th down? A punt or even a fake punt on 3rd down just makes zero sense to me. How is it different in the CFL? Why would the defense even think you are not faking a punt if it's 3rd down?
