Probably, but when you're talking tenths of an mph, it matters.

That is greater than the margin of error for the guns anyway dude.

Too many variables to just watch a pitch on camera. You'd need the exact distance from release point to mitt and the camera angles would need to be perfect. Plus, you need to get a time measurement to at least hundredth, and better, the thousandth of a second.

One foot of difference in measurement is almost 2mph. But, given some great footage, it's possible to get a ballpark mph, pun intended.

100 mph
528000 feet/hr
146.67 feet/sec
60.5 feet

0.4125 time

98.34 mph
519235.2 feet/hr
144.23 feet/sec
59.5 feet

0.412529813 time

all this talk reminds me when I was a kid and I got for my 10th birthday one of those baseballs with a built in timer that once released it triggered a stop watch to start and then stopped upon impact on a glove and I would measure out my distance from where I was throwing to and do the calculations to find out how fast I was throwing.

I saw Chapmen on TV for the first time the other day against SD and he came in for relief to pitch against Adrian Gonzalez. And he threw three pitches. 102, 103, 104. Grab some pine Adrian. After the strikeout, they panned over to Miguel Tejada who was on base and you can see him yell out "Wow!!!" This guy was exciting to watch, I am sure it would be twice as much in live play.

Can someone really hold up for a few years with that kind of torque and forces at work in that arm?
NOTHING under 100 in 23 pitches is nuts. I can't believe he can keep doing that without serious damage.

With a properly calibrated and tested gun(s) as opposed to simply throwing a number on a scoreboard to make a crowd ooh and aah.

This article explains why a human arm isn't capable of throwing much beyond 100 mph, if at all.

I think the clubs all use properly calibrated and tested guns, at least when they're evaluating talent. The stadium guns are useless from a club standpoint. They're just there for the fans.

FWIW I watched that outing and didn't believe he was anywhere above say 96-98 mph...until a few pitches got away from the catcher. Until the catcher had to move it didn't seem that special. When the catcher had to unexpectedly move to try and get in front of a pitch, he looked like an overmatched little leaguer (not)holding on for dear life.

It seems to me that MLB could just take a clip of any pitch delivered and measure the time from when it left the pitchers hand, to the time it crossed home plate and determine pretty accurately the exact speed of the pitch (time X distance=velocity). Of course, this would only be done after they could look at the film, but it still could be determined pretty accurately, who has thrown the ball the fastest.

Isn't that what the new systems (QuesTec (what they recorded Zumaya @ Oakland with) or Zone Evaluation) do? with software progs taking the readings/doing the calculations.

I seem to recall it had something to do with the terminal speed of a pitched ball being the sum or the speed of 6 or 7 different body movements. Don't recall if it was 7 separate body movements with a max contributory speed of 15 mph each (105 mph max total) or 6 separate body movements with a max contributory speed of 17 mph (102 mph max speed).

Looks like it's 6 body movements maybe. Going from 102 to 105 adds another .5 mph on to each separate movement, or getting really strong in one or 2 or 3 areas and adding a mph on to those.

Could be that Champman and Zumaya are just genetic freaks. I've seen Zumaya pitch in the same games as Verlander and when Zumaya came in to pitch the increase in speed was noticeable from the stands. Could be that Verlander's only throwing 97 and Zumaya 102, but I think Zumaya's been clocked in just about every park he's pitched at 100+.

Don't imagine that every radar gun that clocked Zumaya's 233 100 mph+ pitches in 2006 was hot:

"After the 2006 season, The Bill James Handbook published a list of pitchers and the number of their pitches thrown at 100 mph or more. Zumaya led the Major Leagues with 233. Zumaya's average fastball was 98.6 MPH, with 100+ MPH fastballs coming one out of six pitches."

I still think it's not necessary and probably shortening both pitchers' careers. Verlander could maybe throw faster than his usual top out speed of 99 to 101 mph, but it's not necessary when he has a solid change and a quality hook to mix in.

It depends on which radar gun they use. The JUGS gun is the "fast" gun, which meaures the balls speed when it is released from the pitchers hand. Ra-guns show slower speeds, because this radar gun measures the speed of the ball when it is at the batter.

I think these pitch speeds are all bullshit. Chicks dig the fastball? This has Pud Selig written all over it.

I just heard a commercial for the playoffs and they actually used this line. Year of the pitcher?? Every other pitcher supposedly throwing 100+ fastballs?? I fuckin knew it was all a marketing ploy. Fuck you, Pud. FUCK! YOU!

Regardless of how fast they were...his pitches were getting knocked all over the park.

Bud took the juice out of the balls this year.
